Taking the SAT 4 Times?

Does it hurt you if you take the SAT four times?
I'm taking it for the fourth time in December :(

How will it affect me?

what if I dramatically increase my score?

this has me worried
please help :(

take it, but be srue you can get higher. Have you studied significantly more than the last time? if not, consider not taking it. you cant just rely on luck to get you higher score.

also, colleges dont really care how many times you take it. and, there’s always score choice.

Four times is too many.

Im applying to Cornell and they do not allow score choice

Im not in school right now so i have my two month vacation to study
and believe me!
ill be ready!

All AdComm peeps we have heard speak have said they take the highest of both scores and use those…

Now the college counselors at our son’s school rec the first SAT be taken late spring of Jr year–because of the content and giving the student time to be ready …

The GCs tell the families that taking the SAT over and over general yields diminishing returns and raises anxiety for the student.

You haven’t said what your scores are–just that your heart is on Cornell–
Is it possible you are putting too much pressure on yourself?

First of all…score choice is not recommended by gc’s at good schools. Just send everything. Colleges could care less how many times you take it. At my son’s school, lots of people take it three times as well as taking the ACT once or twice.

“Colleges could care less how many times you take it”

Not universally. The colleges that do not accept Score Choice have done so specifically to curb the urge by students to take the test multiple times. Their attitude is that 1) the tests have limited utility and 2) certain economic groups only have multiple test sittings.

By not allowing Score Choice, they hope to incent students not to be test-taking wonks.

GC’s at my son’s school say score choice is not good, because sometimes a kids (or a lax gc) will inadvertently not send in a better score. We trust out gc’s implicitly; they are truly experts at what they do (top college-prep bs). They know what they are talking about.

i took the SAT four times. I was not extremely happy with my scores the first three times I took it (even though I went up 100 pts between 1st and 2nd time, and up 60 pts the third time). I finally got the score i wanted on the forth. My score is over 300pts higher than my original score and 100 pts higher than my score the 3rd time I took it. I was hesitant to take it that fourth time, but now, I am incredibly happy that I did.

Pacers, I would definitely recommend it. If you really do work hard you can improve it.

Four times is seriously overdoing it. If you wanted to score well, you probably should have done it one of the three times before then. However, if your score is below the 25% mark for your target school, take it again and just take the hit.

Did you try the ACT? Perhaps you’d do better on that test.

If you are taking the SAT 4 times, im assuming your SAT isnt superb (2250+)? So you probably wont be shooting for Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and the other school that doesnt take score choice.

So therefore it wont matter at all because of Scorechoice.

My first time I got a 1300
second 1610
third 1690

I am in the exactly same position as pacers7ind. First time took the test, I got a 1460, second time 1620 and third time 1690. I dont know if I want to take the SAT a fourth time. Should I? I will be turning in most of my applications on December 1st, so I don’t know if taking it again in December will affect that. :frowning:
Please help!

I’m taking it again and I do recommend you take it again uw20206 because more than likely you’ll do better.

I would take a 1700 over a 1690 anyday

umm… pacers… I’m so sure if Cornell will look upon a 1300 so favourably, even if it was the 1st time around.

Go ahead and take it again. You don’t sound as if you are having anxiety attackes and the college AdComms don’t care. They will only look at your highest score.

If you don’t do better, it won’t matter. If you do better, it will help you - but perhaps not as much as you think.

The SAT is only one part of the Admissions process.

I am in the same situation, here are my scores 1700, 1980, and 2020.
I am shooting for UCs, USC, and some other privates.
SHOULD I TAKE IT AGAIN IN DECEMBER?

OMG im in the same situation…
I took it three times and my scores are:
1910, 1950, 2080
or 2100 superscored.
I have no idea if I should retake it or not.

I think I might look into ACT.
