I need some help with my scholarship search. For some reason it's super hard for me to find talent scholarship opportunities. Are these mostly offered by the specific college I would be applying to? Or are they offered by separate organizations? I find the scholarship process really confusing. Should I be applying for scholarships before I apply to colleges? Am I technically allowed to apply for a scholarship before gaining application? I apologize for my naivety about the college thing. I really just need some help figuring it out. I accidentally posted this twice and dont know how to remove it I'm sorry

Each school handles talent scholarships differently. Some colleges have talent scholarships posted right on their webpage, like Coastal Carolina. Many have the opportunity for talent scholarships as the process goes on. In many cases, though, the talent scholarships are tied to need—they are need/talent. Since you specify only talent, does that mean you have no financial need? Remember college is extremely expensive, so even if you live a nice middle class life, you may still qualify for need based grants. Talk to your parents to see if you should apply for a FAFSA.

I don’t personally know any BFA program in which you’d apply for a talent scholarship. It is more something that is awarded to you based on your audition and other factors. At least for the first year. THere are some programs that award you a talent based scholarship in your second, third and/or fourth years. Scholarships can be for one year, or all four years but you need to maintain a certain GPA, or simply guaranteed for four years. Be sure to check the type when/if you get it.

There are other scholarships that would be offered by outside organizations, and these you would apply for separately. You are certainly allowed to apply for any outside scholarship at any time in your career, up through and including your time in college. Sometimes the outside scholarship will then impact your award, but sometimes it won’t.

Since D’s school offers no talent scholarships, her bigger talent awards came through YoungArts (Winners can be awarded up to $10k) and other competitions (for example the recent NATS National MT competition carried a $5k prize), so in addition to investigating what schools offers you might investigate some of those as well. Every little bit helps!
