I’ve heard from what seems like everywhere that every Brown student has at least one incredible talent if not more. I’m curious as to what kind of talents everyone is referring to. I emphasized my musical talent in my application and sent them a CD that got me a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music guitar session last summer. If anyone feels like posting any talents they are presenting in their application I would find that very interesting. Thanks!

I wrote about playing poker. I got in

I'm a state chamipon at debate and I wrote a 103 page, 20,500 word novelette. I'd love to be writer, and talked about that in my essays. My essay was also extreemely creative. It was kind of like a 500 word short story. I don't know how it'll go over though - I'm RD this year, so...

Ehhhhh...I seem to have a gift for languages. Not that it counts for much, but my greatest academic passion is Linguistics and my essays revolved around it. Does it sounds quirky enough for Brown folks?

I like math. Math is good. I didn't get in yet, though, so maybe math doesn't qualify as a special talent.

c'mon.... there's gotta be more talented people than that. don't be modest
now! :)

here's my two cents.. despite common belief, not ALL of those who get into brown/an ivy/college are extraordinarily talented or remarkable. it IS possible to be accepted as a normal, intelligent person (not that i have been). but really, considering the number of students who do attend colleges around the nation, there can't actually be that many talented individuals. anyway, good luck to everyone!

I got in ED to PLME, and I think my family's history in viticulture and my personal obsession with cooking, compounded with my extreme interest in medicine/surgery, are what counted as my personal talent. All of it was expressed interwovenly in three of my essays.

yeah, you'd be surprised how underwhelming people can be, when you hear the hype about how amazingly special everyone must be in order to get into these schools. At least in my opinion. That's not to say people aren't interesting, but certainly not everyone is a world champion at something or whatever.

My daughter, a freshman at Brown, wants to be an Egyptologist so she took some correspondence courses in high school. She had a recommendation from her teacher (an E-ist with a number of published books) plus a couple work samples from the courses, which said teacher had reviewed and written comments upon. Naturally, she sent in the ones with great comments!

She had a couple nice ECs showing dedication and the fact that she got out of the house (we homeschooled and so people often wonder about that ...). But she hadn't reached the heights than would have turned either into a hook.

I'm heavily involved with art and have shown my work in about 20 exhibits since the ninth grade. Also have won various art awards from some of these exhibits and other competitions. I have designed logos for a couple of college departments and clubs, and I frequently paint murals in local schools and other public buildings. I sent slides of some of my pieces with my application and emphasized how much I was impressed with Brown's art department and how I would like to have the opportunity to take classes at RISD.

I have no talents :-(

my essay was about my love of U2... that's special in its own way i suppose

my essay was about a flute piece
i also sent in a flute CD
i guess thats my talent, but i doubt it will really help me get in, since tons of musicians apply to schools like brown :(

mine was about the trombone as a extended metaphor etc. super corny but it helped

Ooh, park, which piece? I didn't send a recording to Brown, but I did to other places of the Bozza Image and the Payne "Reflections," you know that one they commissioned for the NFA convention two years ago. I'm into modern :)

So....my "talent" is just the propensity to walk the line between normal and weird. Individually, my interests are no big deal, but put in one package, I'm like a smoothie blend of liberal and conservative. You know, Victorian attitude, 1950s dress, and 2050 ideals. I paint pictures of traditional subjects on any convenient surfaces in my house, I think both Dvorak and Green Day are amazing, and my two favorite subjects are history and biology. I'm just...weird.

philosophy here.
i love philosophy and write essays in my spare time.

i dont have any prizes though :( not much to 'win' in.
then again I don't go to Brown, I don't know how special that is.

wait. i play a musical instrument, and although i'm not world-class or anything, i can play well. however, i got the impression that i should only send a CD of me playing if i was highly talented. now i'm not so sure...

omg i sent in bozza image too!
i love that piece, i worked on it for a competition
i did the cpe bach sonata, and piazolla tango (it was so fun)
anyhoo, dont think that ur weird, u just have diverse interests, which should make u stand out a little more than others in this whole college process
