Talking about being LGBT for Michigan essay?

For University of Michigan’s first essay topic it says…

Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it.

I was wondering if putting that I’m in the LGBT community would be good. I know colleges are looking for diversity and I am primarily white so would this help me or would I come off as being pretentious? Any input is appreciated!

You should write about whatever you feel most strongly about.

My kid wrote about being an atheist and got in. I thought it was a bit controversial, but she wrote a very heartfelt, funny essay and it did the trick.

I think talking about your involvement in the LGBT community is a terrific way to answer that question. Speak from the heart, be entertaining, dare to tell the truth.
