So say you're passionate for two things: dance and reading
All my extracurriculars have to do with the performing art and such, so would it be a waste to also talk about it on my essay? If they see dance, dance, dance written all over my application in addition to a video supplement, would they read my essay and think, "this kid is a one trick pony?" Cause in that case it would be better to develop the side of me that loves reading, no? Or would they consider talking about dance in my essay as passion lol.

nyctempo, focused extracurriculars are a great thing. One trick pony is the last thing you have to worry about in college admissions these days, with the current trend toward preferring the “well-lopsided” applicant. That said, you don’t want to be repetitive and bore anyone.

Here’s my suggestion: write about dance for your Activity Essay on the Common App. It’s a short essay (1000 character maximum including spaces). Don’t waste space detailing all your dance experience; as you say, there will be dance, dance, dance all over your activities list. Use your 1000 characters to express what dance means to you.

Then you can write about reading for your main essay (500 words), if you like. Just make sure that your main essay is specific, and not just about reading in general. Try to entertain your reader, take him/her on a journey if you can. Think of some stories that convey what reading has meant to you throughout your life. Did you always lug a book everywhere with you? Do you have a favorite character? Tell us a good story about you and your reading.

Good luck with your applications!

^I second all of this.
