Talking about family for my essay?

The prompt is to describe the world you come from (for example, your family, community or school) and tell how your world had shaped your dreams and aspirations.

I can't think of anything to write about. I'm not dedicated to a specific sport or club or anything that would describe My world. So I'm going to write about my family. (That'd be the best option.)

But can I write about how my parents and all my extended family were involved in a genocide where they were almost killed? I was going to give a brief summary of it, and then explain how it shapes my world today. (How it encourages me to work hard and not take things for granted..all that stuff..) and explain how it makes me determined to reach my goals..

Would explaining that still be considered my world? Or would it be weird because it's my parents' experiences?

This is an interesting topic, and you should certainly give it a shot. However, keep in mind that this could easily turn into a regurgitation of memories that only you could understand. Try writing a rough draft and see if there’s enough in this topic to make it worthwhile.

It’s definitely interesting. I agree with the last poster. I’d also say remember to stay focused. Make sure you can directly relate that incident to your own dreams, or else you might get off topic.
