Talking About Self

How can you talk about yourself in your essays without sounding like you are bragging? For example, I want to major in finance, and I would like to put in there that I took $2,000 and invested it to over $8,000. This would show my interest in investing and my ability (somewhat). But, I am not sure how to mention this without sounding like I am sorta bragging or have a heightened view of myself.

Anyone have an idea?

You just have to have some humility. Play down the accomplishment and try to be a little modest. Don't just list "I took $2,000 to $8,000." That's pompous. Create the background. Then, use details to discuss. Details play down the pompousness for the most part.

And have family (if you're comfortable!) and close friends read it. Close friends will tell you flat out if your essay is pompous, I hope. Or if it sounds like you.
