Talking about your future career in your essay?

I went to my english teacher to read over my essay and she said i needed to write a specific major i intend to go in and how my essay (prompt #1) has influenced me and help me succeed in that field.

Is that really necessary?
I mean, at least half the kids who go in with a certain major change their mind once they get in so what's the point?

In my essay i basically talked about how my relationship with someone has changed my perspective on educational values and what's important in life. I wrote in the end something like these goals and encouragements will help me in college blah blah blah but i did not write out any specific career.

Is my teacher high? Or will writing a specific major really makes a difference between an essay that does and an essay that does not?

Depends on the field. If you're heading into engineering, you definitely have to address that somewhere in your essay, says my AP English teacher who also happens to be a college counselor.

Mind you, nothing is 100% necessary for essays. You can't pin down a point that makes or breaks an essay.

I do not think that an essay must go into your planned major. If that were mandatory, the prompt would read something like

...or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on your choice of major.

I think you can take the prompt at face value; it does not require discussion of a major.
