Hello, I am planning on going to tams in 2020 seeing as I am a current sophomore. I was wondering how often I would be able to see my parents.
P.S - At the time of me going to tams I would have my license so I would be able to drive if that is allowed.
Hi! Current TAMS junior here. If your parents live close enough they could literally come visit you every single day. However, that is not a good idea and is discouraged by the staff. At the very most, your parents would come once every weekend, but if you live farther away, you will need to adjust that schedule accordingly, to every 2 weeks for example. You have to go home for a weekend every month, and on top of that, you can use privilege points to request a travel weekend up to 3 times.
You cannot bring a car to campus during your first year.
I also have one more question, what time and days do you have classes in general and can you please tell me what category you entered tams in. Also if I am taking AP Calculus BC in 10th grade, what math class would I take in my 11th grade year. Thank You
It all depends on how you do on the placement test. I have a friend who finished Calc BC but then completely flunked the pre-cal placement test, so he got placed into that class. I entered TAMS into the CS track, which means I have computer science at Discovery Park, chemistry, English, and a math class. My schedule for the first semester was made by staff, so I end up having mostly morning classes, with an awful Wednesday that goes from 8:00 AM to 8:30 PM with around 5 hours of relaxation time. They try and fit in a class every day of the school week, and it is more or less even. To account for my Wednesday, I have one class on Thursday.
I was also wondering if my 1470 on the SAT and a 4.38 GPA will get me into TAMS. I am also part of the Speech and Debate Team, Made AIME 4 years in a row, done math olympiad, participate in science fairs, volunteer at my local mosque, robotics team captain, whiz quiz team captain, and a Chess Club Founder. Do you think this will be enough to get me into tams
Your SAT score is pretty good, and if your school does GPA as mine did, your GPA should also be fine. As long as your math, science and other core class grades aren’t being carried by just a few classes, on the academic side, you should be ok.
In terms of extra-curricular activities, your leadership is pretty good, and your founding of a club will be very helpful. As far as the robotics team and whiz team goes, it also matters how good your team/ you were. As long as your robotics team actually went to competitions and did well, and you did well on the whiz quiz things you should be ok in that area as well.
Volunteering is also good, but it is also important what exactly your impact was. Anyone can volunteer, only a few can make a memorable impact that others will remember.
