it haven’t taken the SAT yet, but I have done a lot of practice tests and the math portion seemed pretty easy. I am two years ahead of the average student in Math. Here is a summary of my academics.
Rank: 3/245
GPA: 4.625/5.0
Most recent report card:
Geometry:100
Biology:97
Art:100
World Geography: 100
English: 96
Spanish:100
Algebra: 98
Swimming: 100
As for extra curricular a they kind of suck. I do Swimming, but I’m awful at it. If I were the coach, I would fail myself. I do art, and I’m actually good at it! Mo compete in small competitions and always win, but I haven’t done anything major. My art teacher, is confident I will do really well at larger competitions, but I don’t do well with disappointment so I’m waiting till next year.
Also, I come from a hillbilly school filled with people that are a little less than bright. I know I will be that one idiot at TAMS, coming from an extremely easy educational environment to one of the hardest in the state. But if anyone has been, I want to know if most people don’t succeed because they are dumb, or can’t manage time/are lazy/don’t study. I am not the lazy type and I know I will devote every waking moment to being the best I possibly can when I get there, but I’m not sure if that will be enough. I just want to know if I can make it in, and if I make it in, would I be able to be successful? I can’t stand failure and I know I would be extremely sad if I ever had to go back to high school.
I really want to go to Yale. Do you think that I would be better off the top of the class at hillbilly ville or somewhere below that at TAMS? Thanks for all the help. I would really love to hear back from someone that went or a yale student or something like that. Thank you for helping me out!
TAMS is pretty much made for students in your situation. It offers college level classes for students that want to take them, but don’t have the resources at their own schools. Are you a freshman currently? I believe that TAMS requires applicants to be enrolled in Algebra 2 in sophomore year. Applications are open to sophomores and sometimes freshman that meet the requirements and are due around February (last month for class of 2017). TAMS likes students that hard working and want to go into STEM careers. They’re especially lenient towards students that come from small schools that don’t offer advanced classes like AP, Honors, etc. You’ll probably need an SAT score of 1900+, 600+ in all of the subjects. These are by no means official, just my look on it. A couple good recommendations and a well written essay (explaining your situation) and you’ll probably have a pretty good chance. Of course, you’ll have to do very well on the algebra tests on invitation day, but those should be no problem for you as long as you do the practice tests they give you.
I’m not an alumni, so I can’t say if you’ll do well or not at TAMS, but it is a good opportunity to get ahead and challenge yourself. If you’re interested, schedule an visit on the preview days. I hesitant to apply initially, but I was convinced after my visit. My advice is to apply for early admission if you’ve made up your mind. That’s what I did. From what I’ve heard chances are much better. You also find out if you made it sooner.
(I’ll be attending TAMS in the fall you can check out my chance me thread if that helps )
Thanks for all the information! I am a freshman and I am taking algebra two and geometry this year. Would I be qualified to start now?
What is the link for your thread?
Tams junior here - You don’t actually need a 1900+ SAT to get in if you’re from a small town. However, if you get 650 on math and 600 on the other sections, you’ll be almost set. I know a boy here from a small town that got a 1610 or something. Your essays and interview have to be fairly well written/said, and show that you’re sane and have an interest in STEM. Definately apply early and wear fancy stuff (there were a lot of kids in suits there).
I really want to get into TAMS. Im in 8th grade and am soon going to be in 9th. What should i do to definitely get in?
