Tasp 2007

Bre you were right sleep is over rated.

Gah I hate all nighters (TASS +Finals=:()

I feel for everyone who hasn't finished their apps, because if I hadnt finished I might have just died.

Good Luck!

I still may just die.
Well, I will die, most certainly, but I may just die in the next week.
Or something like that.

haha. Your in Germany, no?

Gah. I gave up 4 weeks in Germany as a camp councler for applying to TASS :-/ Tell me it isnt worth it.

tako - don't worry. That just means that you're not totally insane. I, on the other hand, am.

WHAT? Sleep is NOT overrated!!! Sleep is the best thing EVERRRR. School is overrated.

So I'm cramming in to finish all my essays now... having some trouble on figuring out what exactly a critical analysis is (would something of an IB Literature-level book analysis qualify?).
My main qualm is the ''personal conflict" essay. I'm have a lot of trouble thinking of a topic. Does anyone have an suggestions for a thought process I can use to find my topic, or examples of their previous essays?
Thanks a lot!

BrownCow-
For your personal conflict essay, it does not have to be some major thing that happened to you. Most teens lead fairly normal lives and have pretty similar issues. It can be a relatively "small" conflict - it is more the way it affected you and got you to think and/or change. For example (i don't know if you're a male or female, but anyway) if all your friends are obsessed with dieting and body image and you're okay with the way you are but you feel pressure to conform to their way of eating, that would be a conflict - not earth-shattering, but something that you have to confront everyday and therefore it does impact your life. If you start thinking about the things in your current or past life that negatively impact you, there is probably some type of conflict at the root of it. And remember, it can be an internal conflict, too. Say that most of the kids at your school cheat, and you know that you are at a disadvantage if you don't cheat, but you can't live with yourself if you do. And you can't really tell on the other kids because of the numerous issues involved with that. So, ultimately, you have to decide that your personal integrity is worth more than gpa, rank in class, the college you get into, etc. As I said earlier, a lot of us confront these type of issues everyday and it is the way that we approach them that says a lot about us and I think that is what TASP wants to see. On the other hand, if you have had a major conflict (like you were kidnapped and escaped from your captors) by all means write about that.

Is anyone else having an incredibly difficult time understanding the application assembly instructions? I just printed my application off the computer so I don't have a folder, so how do I assemble it. Just three packets all paperclipped together, all facing right side up? Since it will be shipped in a manila envelope, do we need to fold it?

blah. why is this so confusing?

OHMYGOD.

I just realized that I have two days to get my teacher rec. It's not that bad, I've already talked to the teacher...but chances I'll have to remind her tomorrow...and she will have forgotten...eesh.

I need to go buy my transcripts tomorrow as well.

And finish my essays too.

But on the bright side, things will be less stressful as of the 23rd.

The critnal is giving me grief.

Is it a terrible idea to have a 5 paragraph essay? I try to avoid it as much as possible in all my writing, but for the critnal, I ended up having 3 main points about the poem and voila! - 5 paragraph essay.
ewww, I don't like it, but I don't know how I can change it. So, I need opinions on the 5PE: yay or nay?

inkspill - 5PEs are popular because, quite often, they are an effective way of organizing essays. If it's a good essay, it will stand out regardless of how you structure it.

crimson12 - thanks for the reassurance. its ironic because I didn't even plan it to turn out that way, it just sort of....evolved

inkspill - that's even better. It shows that you're really using it because it's the appropriate method in this instance.

Good heavens, it looks as if this thread will never be dormant, eh? :)

Im so ****ed..... I turned my app in 5 days ago to meat the deadline. And now this comes up.. I could of had an entire free weekend (no schoolwork because of finals) to work on my essays....It must be FATE!!!! :-P

BrownCow--think of things that make you sad, that make you frustrated. think of events that have given you some trouble, internally or otherwise. think of your first bar fight.* think of internal dilemmas, of bullies, of a realization that was difficult for you to accept.

dandelion--you should put it in a large manila envelope (like 8.5 by 12 inches or something) so that you don't have to fold your app. these should be available at any post office or mailing place and are really cheap. and yeah, just paperclip them. it should be fine as long as all the app pieces are in there.

PS I agree that school is overrated as well, but it's much less of a legal problem to miss out on sleep than to skip school. But hey, if you think TASP is worth a truancy ticket and / or being sick for school, whatevs.*

*sarcasm

Haha The prep thing was hard Dandelion.

I definetly wanted to put the pages un folded in the envelope but it specificly said to fold it so I folded it anyways, IDK.

As for the instructions in mailing the application, must the whole application be in a large manilla envelope as the application suggests or can it be in a large school envelope? (Because my guidance counselor gave me a large school envelope to use) I think my gc prefers I use the school envelope but I dont want to create a hassle for no reason. So... will TASP look down upon my application because I didn't strictly follow the instructions?

no... it's fine. any big envelope.

Thnx alot.
