TASP 2017

@LoveTheBard If the answer to the question above is yes, would you be able to look at one of mine as well?

@steph_sky8278 @annagrace18 hey guys I would also be more than happy to look over your essays and offer advice  I’m actually a really, really good writer (at risk of sounding super douchey lol)

You can just PM me and I will give you one of my email addresses

is TASP for rising juniors only or can i still apply as a rising senior?

@exilion If you are currently a junior you are eligible! (Current sophomores cannot apply to TASP, but can apply to TASS (a less intensive, shorter seminar))

@steph_sky8278 and @annagrace18 - I’d be happy to look at them. Just PM me.

Urg TASP application and finals…fml  :((

Hey fellow prospective TASPers! Anyone else dying because of essays+midterms? :frowning:

On a side note, does anyone know if they read all of the essays at once, or read them as they come in? (aka is there an advantage in sending the app in early?)

@pielovereternal Probably do both, so you can really illustrate how you’ve grown/showed maturity, which is really what they’re looking for.

Ha I’m reading all of your comments about finals but I go to a non-semestered school, so I’m just watching all of you suffer while I chill behind the scenes LOL :))

@LoveTheBard @hope469 Ok thank you guys! That makes sense. Another side note though: how important do you think it is that we hurt this person in a specific community, rather than just someone we know?

Thank you and good luck to all applicants!

Good luck to you all! I keep stumbling upon this TASP thread, and I fondly* remember scouring every piece of information on the internet related to TASP, including every past CC thread, to the point of distraction during the application process and beyond.

Take a deep breath and embrace the experience of just writing the apps, because I personally learned a lot about myself just through writing the essays (let alone the interview and program itself).

@pielovereternal
Be careful with wording, I was very concerned when I read a few words of your post (“how important do you think it is that we hurt this person”)! I personally wrote about someone very dear to me, from a smaller community as compared to a person of general community (sorry, don’t want to give too many details away).

I believe that this essay is more about showcasing your maturity, so it might make a stronger essay to write on someone close to you, as compared to someone you may know casually. The main questions are how did you make amends, salvage the relationship, etc.? If it’s an acquaintance, you may be hard-pressed to find specific details, but totally up to you. Good luck!

@PotatoStorm Lolll I didn’t realize, whoops! Better not make a similar mistake on the essay.

Thank for the insight! That helps so much  I’m pretty close to this person—not exceptionally, but I think I can try and make it work in terms of showing personal growth/maturity.

Overall I’m not too invested in getting in, knowing the virtual lack of my chances—and a lack of emotional attachment is actually helping be enjoy the process a LOT more than with TASS last year. good luck to everyone! If anything we should organize an alternate TASP for people who didn’t get into TASP and really wanted it for the experience of discussion with critically-minded people.

Yeah is anyone else trying not to get really invested in TASP? Because I keep finding myself watching videos and reading forums about TASP, even though I know it’s only like a 5% chance of getting in LOL.

@steph_sky8278 I’ve managed by the “eyes on your own lane” philosophy, and only sticking to the TASP website and my essays (I’ve just discovered this thread!) Speaking of which, does anyone have any interesting backup plans? I’m planning on volunteering with a local theatre group which puts on free productions of Shakespeare in the summer, interesting stuff

@hope469 haha yeah I’m trying but I always get distracted…

In terms of backup plans, I’m not sure yet, there are a few other summer programs I’m looking into which deadlines are in a month or so, so I haven’t taken a good look yet because I’ve been so focused on this one lol.

Shakespeare in the summer… sounds fun!

@steph_sky8278 Sounds cool! If I can ask, what other programs? I’m still searching lol

In general, does anyone know of any humanities programs like TASP?

@hope469 Well I’m low-income so I can only go to programs that offer scholarships, there’s a model UN program at Harvard, and the National Student Leadership Conference that I got an invitation to ( but you can also apply if you didn’t get an invitation) as well as the humanities program that was linked in this thread a few pages back. So the other programs aren’t really humanities based, which sucks, so yeah, if anyone knows of other humanities program please do let us know!

Is it okay if for the essay about upsetting someone I talk about something that I did over and over again rather than focusing on one specific incident? Also, is it okay if it’s a group of people rather than one specific person?

Hello fellow tasp applicants!
For the list of favorite books/media, how many is everyone including?

@perksof1975 hey! I think for me, I have 9 total (7 books, 1 movie, 1 album). Honestly, I don’t think it matters how many you include (ex: if you only have a couple but explain that they were really impactful to you). that part of the application was soooo hard for me bc HOW CAN I TALK ABOUT ALL MY FAVORITE BOOKS IN ONLY 1500 CHARACTERS. I’m sure that whatever number you have is fine.
