TASP 2018

Hey! I’m from TN and sent in my app about 2 weeks ago! When are we supposed to hear anything??

@MemesInDreams I did the same approach. I guess we’ll wait and see.

@hayisforhorse March

@MemesInDreams same

Hey guys! Sorry to resurrect this thread during the waiting period.

So I did possibly the dumbest thing I’ve ever done in the application and accidentally said that Fahrenheit 451 was written by George Orwell instead of Ray Bradbury in my list of favorite books… Yeah, pretty bad, I know. I was reading Animal Farm at the time for school and since they’ve got somewhat similar themes I guess they just blended together in my head. What I’m debating is if I want to email them and correct that statement in my application. What would you guys do? If you were to email them, does anyone know where to find contact information?

Hey gals and guys! I went back to my app and clicked “view HTML.” I have a quite a few typos. I can DM someone what I sent in and he/she can tell me if it’s bad enough to worry about. If so, I will see if I can get it fixed. xx (DM me) @curiositea I will ask the Cornell office and see if we can correct typos x

@palinoia I don’t know if we actually can correct typos, but I emailed them and I’m going to see what happens I guess

@curiositea worst case scenario they say no. That’s why you should proof read essays before submitting them :-??

That’s funny tho @curiositea I put those two books in as well.

@MangoLover11223 I went back through my essays at least 10 times, but I never caught that particular mistake. (I’m really stressed by other stuff, so I know it’s in my head, but I did take a little offense to your comment. No hard feelings, of course, seeing as you’re a random internet stranger. I just want to clarify that my issue was a simple mistake, not a lack of proofreading :slight_smile: )

@MemesInDreams between that and your username you’re my new favorite person on this thread hahaha

Oh gosh. After reading this, I now feel really awkward that I did a compare and contrast for the list of favorite media essay instead of writing an actual list. Oh well, no turning back now. Everyone here seems really smart, best of luck for March!

@Thundercrashbolt How on earth did you compare and contrast your favorite media?

P.S. just roll with it they might think you’re quirky

@MemesInDreams I wrote about how my favorite book focused on fixing the future while my favorite movie focused on letting go of the past, but also how they both have a primary theme of personal growth.

I actually couldn’t decide on a list due to indecisiveness.

lol my book of choice was ‘the life-changing magic of tidying up’, talked abt author’s point abt how cleaning room = cleaning mind, and applying that stuff to the problems in my day to day life.

I’m really wondering how TASP is going to choose some 60 odd people from over a thousand applicants. They can’t even rely on test scores and GPA to narrow the pool since the first cut is only based on essays. Everyone on this thread seems so insightful and intelligent. Good Luck to all. Fingers crossed. I hope my readers like my essays.

Personally, I think it’s going to come down to three things:
-originality + uniqueness in the essays
-extracurriculars
-conveying you fit their mold(mature, collaborative, insightful, intelligent…)

I agree @Acortex122, just overwhelmed by the sheer number of applicants.
Speaking of extracurriculars, what did you guys put down? Did you list a lot or focus on a few?
Personally, I only wrote about 3: Speech and Debate Captain, FBLA Pres, and Varsity Tennis because the rest of my extracurriculars are nowhere near as good.

Also, as a Californian, I think Telluride should have locations on the West Coast.

@Optimism2018

  1. Having the opportunity to write a bill on mental health, which is currently still in the process of being actually written (as in its not a bill yet lmao but is in the process of becoming one), in honor of a friend of mine who killed himself, whose parents said that a better mental health curriculum could have helped him
  2. Being a director of a huge leadership conference relating to social issues and how it helps me to advance my own love for student voice as well as advocate for other students
  3. Serving on the Disaster Action Team for the American Red Cross in LA, working additionally as one of 42 interns selected out of an app pool of like 500 ish?? but i didnt focus on the internship, i focused on serving on DAT and the empathetic experiences i got out of it, mentioning a story about a little kid i met while providing assistance

i tried to pick the ECs that i had done that i felt could relate to tasp’s values

@kungfukenny

Nice!! So, like me, you decided to focus on your 3 main activities instead of listing many, right? I could have listed more but I felt like it would have diluted from my application.

Your ec’s put my generic ecs to shame. In retrospect, I should have focused more on my community service activities.

I put down 4 ECs, a summer program, and community service in terms of quantity of my content on that section.
