@wypiposuck___ Thank you so much!!
Thank you @philae, I love Andrew Wyeth! And no, I haven’t seen the original, but I would love to go to the MoMA to see it.
Does anyone have any idea how important the book lists are to the application? Also, how much explanation for “its importance to you” should have been described? I forwent a lot of the “explanation” part so I could put 10 pieces of media, but I’m starting to feel like that was a bad idea lol.
@EaseMoney I both criticized my debate partner and wrote all about k authors. Wildersons argument is Afropessimism.
I wrote a ton about wilderson, but I threw in some moten, sexton, and curry for good measure.
@OGSquash i love me some good wilderson, I actually did a lecture/PubSpeak on wilderson/Afropess at TASS!!! It’s a really conducive space for kritkal debaters and you can actually do some research at TASS and not at camp lmao. I highly suggest reading up on k lit and giving lectures on k lit while you’re there so you can do your research for the 2017 topic while you do the required stuff at TASS itself.
@philae I actually wrote Kendrick Lamar too! I wrote Art of Peer Pressure, Chance the Rapper- Everybody’s Something, Ultralight Beam, and Otis Redding. I kind of went overboard talking about music probably, but it’s a pretty big part of who I am so I guess it’s alright.
Definitely! It’s really neat that your essay was inspired from a piece of music and its composer, also its connection to racism is very interesting! George Walker sounds like an incredible figure. @philae i
How is everyone holding up? Is anyone else applying for any other summer programs? If so, which ones? I’m applying for Missouri Scholars Academy, a selective three week program for MO sophomores. Although selective, it’s nothing compared to TASS’ selectivity.
Life’s good! Just nervous for results, lol. I’m plannig to apply to Carleton’s Liberal Arts Experience and maybe their college seminar on International Studies. Also there’s a program at the University of MN on accounting that I’m looking into.
Do you guys have any idea whether interview notification will come out anytime soon?
I believe that in the past, selections have come out in early March (1st week-ish). @pvt11423
Looks like they sent out selections on the 24th of February via email last year (…4 days from now…), but sent out physical letters in the first 10 days of March in 2015. I’m getting really nervous. The more I think about my essays the more I think about what I could’ve done better; I’m just trying not to get my hopes up too high. Good luck to everyone these next few weeks!
I’m part Ghanian too!!! It came up briefly in my essays @Erikahc01 and @DJ01
I write about moving to a different school for a semester, it was an almost predominately black school about (50/50) and compared it to my stark white southern high school. I talked about the privilege differences and how people let that shape their lives. I hinted at my depression but didn’t let it overpower the essay. The reader may or may not see it. But I talked about it in my “extra” essay of 250 characters as it severely affected my grades.
For my second essay, I talked about one of my favorite childhood movies, Akeelah and the Bee, I’ve actually seen it more than ten times to date. I compared it to the expectations black have in our society and how similar Akeelah and I are, and how I’ve always wanted to be just like her.
My third made me sad as I wrote it because I talked about hurting my twin sister and effect it has had on our relationship, and I usually don’t like discussing it.
But I love “It’s kind of a Funny Story” too! It was nice to see into someone else’s mind and helped me understand me depression when I read it a while back.
And I loved “The Picture of Dorian Gray” too!
Check your emails guys, I’m not a finalist. This really sucks.
I got rejected, too. Sigh!
I’m a finalist!! Great job to everyone!
Nice job @DJ01 and the other finalists! I’m not one, but I wish you guys luck in the next stage!!
I’m a finalist as well! Congrats to @DJ01 and all the other finalists. And to those who aren’t finalists: Good luck with any other programs that you may be applying for!
I’m a finalist too!
