TCD Selectivity for American students applying to humanities

American junior here considering applying to Trinity College Dublin this fall to study history or political science (or potentially both through their joint degree). I haven’t taken the ACT yet but I’m getting 34-35 on practice tests, and I rank in the top 10% of my HS class. I’ve taken the most difficult course load at my school if that matters. How does TCD evaluate students? Do AP scores matter a lot or would GPA be more important? Do you have to submit all test scores? Their website lists minimums but it’s been difficult for me to find the actual selectivity of admission.

Thanks a mil :slight_smile:

If they are like UK unis, GPA will barely matter or not at all. Test scores (including APs) will matter a lot.

But being well over the minimum, I think you have a good chance.

@collegemom3717 went there.

GPA matters a little more for US students applying to TCD, because they are so attuned to US students- similar to St Andrews in Scotland. I agree with @PurpleTitan - I would fancy your chances- esp this year, when I have first hand info that both TCD & UCD are very anxious about the number of international students- an important revenue stream- dropping.

@collegemom3717 Do you think UK schools will be in that same situation this year when it comes to admitting US students? I plan on applying to Univ College London and Kings College L as well.

That would be my guess- and as @PurpleTitan indicated, they are completely focused on your APs. Meet the requirements, make a decent fist of your PS, have a solid LoR and the odds are in your favour.

Maybe. It really will depend on the numbers applying.

And also how many with places for this year get a deferral. But the economic turmoil in the US and elsewhere may mean fewer internationals applying for some time to come, which means individuals’ chances are better.
