Looking for a very liberal college in New York or New Jersey for my D who wants to major in creative writing and/or art history. 3.5 GPA and 27 ACT Composite, but very few honors classes. Underachiever for sure and also worried about social issues. D is not the typical rah rah high school kid.
We were both very impressed with TCNJ, but not sure if D can get in without applying ED. Suny at Purchase was great too and socially may be a better fit, but I think TCNJ is a stronger academic school. Worrying about applying ED if D is not entirely sure about TCNJ - concerned that kids there may be too science oriented and not enough into the arts (ie. different than her). Your thoughts between the two colleges or any other ideas? Thanks!
If your kid is waffling AT ALL, she shouldn’t apply early decision…at all. ED is for when the student absolutely feels the school is number one choice bar none.
Is your daughter a HS senior? If so, the ED 1 deadline was November 1…she missed that one.
She could apply ED 2…application due January 1, but really, I’m not sure how much of an “edge” applying ED 2 really is.
My daughter looked at TCNJ and SUNY New Paltz. TCNJ was her top choice and new Paltz was going to be her safety. NP struck us as pretty artsy. Maybe she could look at Muhlenberg too.
My daughter applied ED for TCNJ as she didn’t think any of her other choices were better and the price is right. She got in.3.87 and 1990 SAT (old score method)
Remember that TCNJ was originally a teacher college so there are very many non-science majors. My daughter is majoring in Psychology.
for graduates in 2013, there were graduates from the following areas:
Arts and Communicaiton 10%
Business 20%
Education 17%
Engineering 9%
Humanities and Social Sciences: 22%
Nursing: 8%
Science 13%
Other 1%
Is she a NJ or NY resident? TCNJ is very NJ, with very few out of state students, if that makes a difference. I am also not at all sure the TCNJ would be classified as “very liberal” but not clear what she is looking for. I believe there are the typical artsy/drama things there.
while TCNJ has an incredible reputation for its science programs and pre-med --its really only a small percentage of
the overall institution. They have a recently accredited Art school (new building and all) and if your child has any desire to ultimately teach art or art histoy its one of the best ED programs in the country. Suffice to say, with 6700 students your child will find a crowd of kids with similar interest. Academically its one of the top schools in the tri-state area.
