I run a FB group for TCNJ Parents of the Class of 2019…as Freshman year for our children is about to end, are there any questions that you as parents have as you are deciding or preparing for next year?
One thing that is cool is on our FB group we have a staff person from TCNJ who will help answer questions when we have them.
Looking for a very liberal college in New York or New Jersey for my D who wants to major in creative writing and/or art history. 3.5 GPA and 27 ACT Composite, but very few honors classes.
We were both very impressed with TCNJ. Suny at Purchase was great too and socially may be a better fit, but I think TCNJ is a stronger academic school. Worrying that TCNJ may not be liberal enough and may be too science oriented for my artsy D. Your thoughts between the two colleges or any other ideas? Thanks!
On your other thread I posted statistics about how TCNJ is not as science oriented as you think. I think it is strong academically and an awesome value. However it is not known as a super-artsy school whereas SUNY Purchase is. I would also say to try to look at SUNY New Paltz.
But in reality, at this point…APPLY TO BOTH and then see she gets in. Visit both and see what you think!
And I am not sure if you live in NJ or NY as that will affect price.
TCNJ- 25th / 75th Percentile
SAT Critical Reading: 550 / 640
SAT Math: 570 / 670
SUNY Purchase
Test Scores – 25th / 75th Percentile
SAT Critical Reading: 500 / 620
SAT Math: 490 / 590
@Rajl I would consider creating your own post in this subforum so people notice it.
My son is a jr in high school. He is interested in business. Accounting seems to be what he wants to persue. We shall see. I know all about the business program at TCJN. I know he will get an excellent education there. We live in Ny so we are looking at Albany, Binghamton, Geneseo, and Baruch among others.
My question is simply this. I want hard statistics on what percentage of students land internships at big 4 accounting firms at TCNJ and how many land internships at all other accounting firms.
For example. If there are 100 students in the accounting program as juniors in college, how may of teh 100 students get an internship period, and how many of the 100 are getting internships at the big 4 firms.
@euve69 Ask the accounting chair this question: You can find contact info here;
https://business.tcnj.edu/academics/acct/
It says 70% get an internship.
@Rajl Regarding your question about whether TCNJ is very liberal, here is input from my son who is a freshman at the school (his politics are best described as center-right for your reference):
Regarding his most liberal professor (identity redacted): “xxxxxxxxx, who I like a lot, I tend to disagree with him on some points. He is definitely liberal and definitely doesn’t really ever question his principles, but he doesn’t aggressively force down anyone’s throat.”
Regarding the students: “My friends consist mainly of democrats with a Republican here or there. But is there none of that elitist attitude when it comes to ideology.”
I hope this helps. I think both my son and I would agree that TCNJ leans liberal, but is is probably not “very liberal.”
@Rajl - my daughter is a freshman as well and she said they were watching the election results in the lounge and students were crying as the results came in. She said they also had a gathering the following day hosted by their community advisor where upset students could come together and commiserate about the results. She said the mood on campus was somber in the days that followed.
That’s just one perspective so take it FWIW.
I’ll be a freshman in the fall at TCNJ and I was just wondering if you can tell me how they pick roommates for freshman if they don’t request a roommate.
You fill out a little questionaire about things like when you like to go to sleep, are you messy or not and then they match you up. My DD at first was upset because it seemed their answers were not compatible, but it worked out just fine.
I think I read something about it having to do with which First Seminar Program you selected…
For non-honors program, then yyes, all students in the same FSP will be on the same floor.
Even for the honors program, all students in the same honors FSP will be co-located in Centennial Hall.
Note that TCNJ discourages incoming Frosh from asking for a specific roommate (see “Can I request a roomate?” from the following: http://housing.tcnj.edu/apply/first-year-students/roommate-requests/). It’s also challenging in that both have to have the same section of the same FSP.
The paring they did with my son, while not that close based on the questionnaire, has worked out fine.
Do students stay on campus on the weekends or go home?
@rlhdoyle Honestly I would say some of both from what I saw from my daughter’s friends.
