Yes, I agree with bsmd11. Even if you got a 2400 SAT, A’s in all classes, and 10+ AP classes, you still might not be accepted. They get competitive applicants every year. They choose those that they deem worthy of the program. You need to show compassion for others, hardwork, dedication, and maturity. Extracurriculars and the interviews set people apart because the numbers on paper cannot tell anything about the person’s character and personality. There is no set numbers. But if you really love medicine and you know the downsides and benefits of being a doctor and you can articulate those in the interviews and in your applications, then they will most likely accept you.
However, you still need to meet specific academic requirements like the 1450 combined math and reading SAT score. So just try your best in school.
Good luck!

^markymark15, did u get accepted?

when do interviews for NJ Medical School come out?

desigirl23: What everyone has been saying so far is absolutely correct. I’ll tell you my story, I personally say these NJMS interviews are really a crapshoot and a half. They demand a 1450, top 10% 3.7+, but even with all of that, you might only get an interview at the undergrad school, and not even get considerd for an interview at NJMS.
That was the case for me. I had my heart set on TCNJ/NJMS, literally, that was my goal for my whole high school career. I was working for a 1450+ all through my sophomore and junior year. First time around, i had a 770 in Math, and a 620 in Critical Reading. I took it again, this time focusing on vocab to boost my score some. The 770 was because i got one question wrong, -___- the first one too (the question was 3x = 65, solve for 2x) i got it wrong haha. but thats besides the point. I took it again and got an 800 in Math, and a 680 in CR. 1480. I was good, or so I thought. You seem to care a lot about stats, so i’ll tell you i had a 700 in writing, 2180 total. I’ve taken 7 APs, and I’m taking one on my own right now. All my classes are at the honors or AP level, and i still hold an unweighted 97.47 QPA, which translates to a 4.0. I’m valedictorian of my class of 61 students that go to a magnet school where we have to apply as 8th graders and stuff.
I have an 800 in Math Level IIs, a 710 in Biology and a 700 in chemistry. and i have plenty and i mean plenty of volunteer/research work, as well as even some work at NJMS too last winter. I’m a registered EMT as well and got interviews at all my undergrad schools, meaning tcnj, rutgers, njit, drew, stevens, etc. The interviews went really well, i enjoyed TCNJ’s the most, they were more attentive to my needs, and seemed to make me feel a lot more welcome. I waited 3 months and three weeks ago,
for some reason NJMS denied me an interview. It sucked really really bad but i figure its because of the 680, or maybe because I’m just another desi boy in NJ who’s trying to be a doctor haha. My school doesnt officially rank so it may even be that.
I know theres a large volume of applicants to NJMS this year and they probably made the cutoff 1500 or 1550 for just interviews. Keep in mind that NJMS interviews around 100 to 150 students, and they will only accept 40. So you may even get rejected after your NJMS interview, even if you hold a 1530 or something.
Also, from what i hear, so many people this year got 2300s and 2350s its ridiculous. The competition is only going to increase in two years for you, so i tell you, TRY and get a 1550 at least. If you are worrying about critical reading, focus on vocab, it boosted my score a good 60 points, all because i crammed about 500 words from my first taking to my second taking. Theres a lot you can do, I had a private tutor who helped me on passage based questions, I memorized as many writing and grammatical rules that I could, and i did my best. Math comes natural to me so I didnt prepare for that at all =\ sorry! But If you have any other questions let me know!

HOLY CRAP, you sound like me !, i have scary similar stats- SAT scores, AP’s, research + summer programs, clubs , and im an indian male, except i go to a medicore public school in nj. I applied through tcnj, drew, and rutgers (no tcnj interview becaue my one sitting was 1440 lol, but drew and rutgers forwarded it). I have yet to hear anything from NJMS about the status of my app, but now im scared. this is scary. Im sorry to hear you got rejected, i got rejected from albany med recently so i feel you. I’m REALLY hopeing for this UMDNJ one.

btw, i’ve been waiting like a month and half…i hate that they take so long

dude i think if you have waited till now you’ll probably get it. They say mid february for notifications. I got my rejections early feb!! good luck to you man!

thanks man, dont worry, with your stats + Val your gona go somehwree great, but i find this weird. Looking through last year’s post it seems like most people who didnt get the NJMS interview never heard back until like after all interviews were over, say late march, then they got the rejection letter. I think it’s worse to have that scenario then getting it earlier like yourself; atleast you know what happened.

How long does it usually take after the initial interview to get the second interview? Are we contacted by phone or email?

jj- thanks man, It pretty much took me a long time to get over the fact that I didnt get in, haha i have to tell everyone in my school that their valedictorian failed in the college admission process, but its okay, my options for medicine are still open and that’s all that matters!

iceberg - I had my first Interview with NJIT in Early November, I got my rejection letter in Late January for them. My TCNJ interview was Nov 16, i got their letter in Early february. I heard that NJMS sends out letters in mid-february for those who got in, but who knows lol, i think you’ll get a letter in the mail, emails may come after, and a phonecall comes once you get in to NJMS i believe.

^ NBORAD, UR SCARING ME! OMG! ALOT! :frowning: did you get into other 6 or 7 year guaranteed programs?

I had my first interview on February 10(kind of late, but I did a phone interview) and the interviewer told me I would be notified by early March–this could just be because I interviewed late, but from what she said, it doesn’t seem like if you don’t get it mid-feb, you don’t have the second interview.

I havent gotten in anywhere program related desigirl23 lol, im not kidding. I had my interview for Drexel’s 7 year program last weekend, it was okay, just more of the same. An excess of Indian people competing for a small amount of seats with equal or > stats than me. Drexel College of Medicine only wants a 1360, but they also only take 40/200+, and want a 31MCAT score. Keeping my fingers crossed for that one, even though i dont even want to go -____-
Northwestern HPME rejected me, but after getting rejected from NJMS lol its not rocket science why hpme would say no.
I’m waiting on Brown PLME, but hahaha that falls into the same category as Northwestern. Those programs want 2320+ as a minimum. So that’s gonna be a rejection too. Probably.

-thestartingline : They do let us know by the end of March, and by the amount of people applying this year, you’re most likely right, interviews may even be given out in the next two weeks too, who knows! everythings subject to change every year. Good luck to you though

^so, i think im gonna die by the time i apply lol. Haha. hopefully not, honestly, its luck though. Someone with ur stats, nborad, maybe even weaker, got into the program. I know someone with your stats who got in. So, I am not sure what they specifically look for. lol. Can you elaborate on your extracurriculars. If you don’t feel comfortable telling me on this forum, can you at least PM me? Thanks. And I will PM you back on how I plan to get into the competition in two years, and you can chance me. Thank you.

^also, where else did you apply? drexel, njms, plme, hpme, dats it?

Hey nborad, i didnt get the interview.

I dont understand why they couldnt just mail me the letter like they did for you, atleast have some decency.

Looks like we’re on the same page. i also had Drexel a week ago. Good Luck.

@jj

You called NJMS directly?

Someone with weaker stats got in THIS year??? lol come onnn this is such ******** -__-
and yeah i did Siena, but they rejected me for some reason, Drexel 7 year, HPME, PLME, and this NJMS crap. I shoulda done a lot more now that I think about it. But I was just a bit overconfident that I woudlnt have any problems getting in -- oops?

and jj! you were probably at my drexel interview lol, were you there on the 19th? good luck though I know this **** is hard to get over =</p>

allright wow i didnt know they censor stuff

@iceberg - yes, i called njms office of admissions, spoke with someone who checked my file and said no interview, sorry, and hungup.

@nborad- yeah the 19th lol I didnt really even want to apply to drexel, but just did because anyway. Ironically, its the only one i got an interview at. I applied 7 in total, including plme-no way im getting in, siena rejected me for some reason idk either. oh well, i thought i did everything right but who know’s.

also, concerning the lower stats kid, they probably had some amazing EC, medical research, or the most likely answer: wasn’t an indian male haha.

I just had my initial interview with TCNJ a week ago. Do you think I should call NJMS about whether I got an interview? Or, is it still too soon?
