Son got accepted to the College of NJ and UD Honors. He is from out of state at both schools. i don't know much about Delaware Honors, but older son loved UD. but they are 2 different kids. He is more into politics and wants to major in History and minor in computers.
More info about delaware honors would be appreciated. thanks

I think if your son is out of state, Delaware will feel very much like home - it’s largely out of state students there, like U of Vermont. TCNJ does have many commuters and is largely in NJ students whereas UDel has lots of out-of-state students… I get a sense that UD will provide more of a home. My $0.02

While UDel has a lot of out of state students, most of them live relatively close to the school- in either PA or NJ. That said, the students I know who go there are quite happy. I also think TCNJ is a good environment. My nephew goes there and likes it a lot (soph). Freshman year was a little bit of an adjustment because a lot of TCNJ kids go home on the weekends. Once you get into an activity/social group, this is less of an issue.

U-Del is an excellent and well regarded large school. TCNJ is an excellent and well regarded small school. U-Del may have the advantage as regards “minors” because it is a bigger school, while TCNJ will offers a much more personalized education.

Be glad that your son has such riches to chose from.

Others have covered the major differences.

UDel - larger, 2/3 OOS, privately endowed (=more money), beautiful campus and college town
TCNJ - smaller, mostly in-state and somewhat of a suitcase school, more personal LAC-like atmosphere

Half the kids from my HS end up at UD Honors, usually with merit money. But if you live in northern DE, UD is particularly close to home (<30 min for most everyone) even amongst state schools, and that greatly lessens the appeal.

From my point of view, and from where we live (NJ), the impression is that the % of OOS students at UDel are probably ALL from NY/NJ…while TCNJ is probably all NJ…big difference? not in my mind, but that’s for you to decide…

size will probably be the deciding factor…

Same dilemma here. thanks so much for posting!

^^It makes a difference because students are much less likely to go home on the weekends.

And to be technical, it’s more like UDel is 2/3 NY/NJ/MD/PA while TCNJ is 90% NJ. Regional school vs. true state school, in terms of geographic diversity.
