Teach for America 2016 Corps

I interviewed with a group of great people. Everyone was so prepared and friendly. I was the only one to finish between the 4 and 5 minute mark. It was pretty awkward. Everyone else had to be stopped but their lessons were so fun and interactive. They were mostly aimed at younger grades. I don’t doubt that half those people would get accepted no problem. We were broken up into groups of five for the group activity. We all had a chance to speak and voice our opinions. I am holding on to the hope that I still have a chance even though one of my recommenders didnt come through.

How do we go about changing our preferences? I’m reluctant to unsubmit the form because it’s past the deadline.

I think it’s fine @93Polarbear I went and made an alteration to mine today. I added a highly preferred and switched my #2 preference to DC and resubmitted it. I think as long as you initially had it submitted by the due date it’s ok.

Hey everyone! I applied at the first deadline and got rejected after the final interview and appealed the decision. I just found out yesterday that they accepted my appeal and that I’ll be joining the 2016 corps. I still have to wait until March 17 to find out my assignment but I am so excited and can’t wait. Does anyone know how seriously they factor in special considerations when they assign us our regions?

Hey @dawnbreaker9 ! This is my first time applying so I don’t know much about the special considerations and how it factors in. But I’m curious about the appeal I didn’t know you can appeal an admission decision. How does that work? And congrats for being accepted!!

Hi everyone! This is my second time applying and I also applied to the 4DL. I think my overall final interview was ok. I’m still a little nervous about the one-on-one though fingers crossed

Also, Congrats @dawnbreaker9 I didn’t know that we could appeal an acceptance decision.

My top 3 are Hawaii, DC, and Charlotte

Does anyone have a rough idea as to how many are accepted from the final interview? Or how many invited straight to the final were accepted in the end?

@93Polarbear I have seen a couple of instances when people invited straight to the final did not make it. Based on my research (forums + blogs), skipping the phone interview just means you conveyed what was needed to make it to the final round well on paper- meaning, they just did not have any additional questions to ask before the final interview. I’ve concluded that people who skip the phone interview may have held self explanatory leadership positions (maybe some in those orgs already listed on the app), or did not withdraw from any courses or fail any courses and no further questions needed to be asked. Once we step foot into the final interview, everyone is on the same playing field.

Figuring out the percentage of who gets accepted per round has been tricky. I guess because we have to consider deadline placement as well. It has constantly been explained that we are not competing against each other for a capped position. For instance, my interview had 10 candidates & it was stated that they can accept all of us or none of us. It’s not like they have to choose just 3. I think on a greater scale, there is a cap somewhere because TFA keeps their acceptance percentage between the 10%-15% mark. I would imagine it varies per deadline. I think acceptance percentages are greater in the first deadlines and dwindles as we approach the last deadline.

I have read in a forum before (and this was STRICTLY based on anedoctal evidence) that in a group of 10, 2-5 will get accepted so 20%-40%, but once again, deadlines make a difference.

I do want to reiterate that it’s hard to estimate because I am sure there are instances where no one in a group makes it, and on the other end, everyone in the group makes it.

Not everyone makes it to the final interview. A lot do not make it to the phone interview. I have read accounts attesting to both.

Thank you so much! I’m getting a little nervous. Less than two weeks left!

5th deadline apps were due yesterday, so now, they will have a total number of applications for this cycle.

I know application numbers have dropped in recent years. I do wonder if this year they have declined or increased. I would imagine that if there was a decline, that has a bearing on how many of us gets accepted. I think that aspect has me nervous. TFA has a certain prestige I did not realize existed until way later in the process. Even if numbers have dropped, that acceptance percent will stay in place. That means there are less offers being made. I’m curious to find out the final application count for this cycle.

I’m a little paranoid about the transitional funding gimmick that’s circulating TFA forums. I don’t know how sure fire that is of an indication, but that doesn’t stop me from checking 10 times a day. If it changes to “YES”, that’s supposed to be a good indicator. Maybe they have changed it by now. I don’t know haha.

Hi all! I’ve been obsessing over whether or not I’ll be accepted since 2 seconds after my interview on 2/26, so I figured that I’d join the discussion. Anyone else constantly have the TFA applicant center open 24/7? Also, has anyone had their need-based transitional funding documents verified yet? I didn’t submit mine until Friday afternoon (the deadline).

I have been obsessing too!! Yes, I look at the application center several times a day. No change in my transitional funding yet. I hope to see a change by the end of next week.

I submitted my documents the day before the deadline. No change. I have also been checking every second although I don’t expect anything to change during the weekend. I will update if I do see a change. I doubt I will get accepted but I am holding on to a little hope.

I’ve also had the center open every time I’ve been around my phone/laptop  I haven’t seen any change yet either but will post if anything does happen. Looking at past years, sounds like some initial TF updates should be happening any day this week!

I’m trying to stay optimistic! Does anyone have any interesting back up plans just in case?

I submitted my TF App on the 19th of February. I will keep you all posted on any changes that could potentially take place.

Also, if anyone still needs to make any changes to their assignment preferences, I just unsubmitted mine & readjusted some things, so it’s still safe to do so as of now.

Like I said, I’m in the same boat. I keep checking even though I know nothing is going to be updated over the weekend. I feel somewhat certain that I won’t get in, but I’m trying to stay as optimistic as possible. If I don’t get in, I still may move to my top choice - Indianapolis. It seems like a decent place to live, and there are greater job opportunities than compared to New Hampshire, where I currently live. I will still pursue teaching, however I know it will be a more difficult path without TFA’s help.

@TFA2016AJ Yep! I’ve been playing around with my location. During my interview we were told that it would be open for a while longer. She gave us the exact date that it will close. I forgot when it will, though.

I’m constantly checking the applicant center too lol. I’m so impatient all this waiting is agonizing! I just saw that the final date to make changes to assignment preferences was the 3rd so I hope everyone got their modifications in on time.

If I’m not admitted I’m still going to go to Charlotte, I got a job offer down there but I have them on hold and my fingers crossed!!
