Hey everyone! I applied for the 4th deadline and had my final interview in SF on the 2/24. I’m really nervous, especially because my GPA was only a 2.94 in college. Currently, I’m doing an AmeriCorps program focused on nonprofit work, so I’m hoping this will be my saving grace. But I noticed during the final interview, and even the phone interview, I wasn’t asked many questions about my AmeriCorps experience. I feel kind of unsure about the final interview because I didn’t think the questions asked really reflected neither my strengths nor desire to join the Corps. Does anyone feel the same way? My interviewer was so nice, but we did finish early. And I’m also really worried about that.
Hi @awesomebins! I believe you and another poster were concerned about GPA, but both of you made it to the final interview. I think the only time you two really had to worry about your GPA was back when you first submitted the application. They’ve seen your GPA and still wanted you to go further in the process meaning you have a lot more to offer that they’re interested in so I wouldn’t stress about that.
I’ve read a lot about people not being asked questions they expected during the interview. Your AmeriCorps experience probably speaks to a certain set of skills in itself so they didn’t bother “wasting time” (so to speak) asking redundant questions about it.
I feel the same. I have a year of ESL and GED tutoring experience, as well as spending the last 6-8 months as an AVID tutor and after school instructor at a charter school. None of this experience was talked about in the final interview. Instead, we discussed my leadership roles as a SGA student senator and as an officer in the pre-law society at my university. The final interview was fairly cold because my interviewer was typing on her laptop the whole time, and while she was a nice lady, she didn’t have a bubbly personality. I really don’t know how I did, honestly.
Thanks @TFA2016AJ and @93Polarbear for your comments! I’m hoping that it’ll work out for us. One thing I’ve noticed in the previous threads is that if TFA verifies your TF documents, you might have a better chance of getting in. Do you all agree with this? It seems so from the 2015 thread. I know making assumptions and drawing conclusions at this stage probably doesn’t help any of our nerves LOL but I can’t help it!
I just got an email saying I need to submit a fafsa for my TF application and my pell grant info. The status was changed from Under review to incomplete. Is this bad or is does this count as verified documents? Sorry y’all, just found this thread so I’m a noob.
Hey everyone! I am a junior applicant and I’ve been lurking for a while. March 17 its taking forever to get here. Some of you mentioned that you still have the option to resubmit your assignment preference form. Mine is closed and said that I can’t make any edits after March 3rd. Do you think this is a good sign? I’m probably reading way too much into it haha.
@awesomebins I wouldn’t say that it’s a bad thing necessarily. At least they’re looking at your documents. I submitted mine way before the deadline and it’s still unchanged. Says they haven’t reviewed it yet.
Just so we’re clear, everyone’s status says “complete” under the status category of the transitional funding, right? But when you click the blue link to view your TF, it just says that it hasn’t been viewed yet.
@93Polarbear Yes, it says completed on the main portal, but when I click on the tab for TF, it says “under review”. At first, it said incomplete since I needed to submit some more documents, but then it changed to under review again so I’m a little confused. Maybe its a glitch?
I read on last year’s thread that them reviewing and verifying your TF is a good sign, but then some people said that theirs was reviewed and they were still rejected so I wouldn’t count on that too much
I’m worried that I was too picky with my regions. I only chose 3 HPs and they recommended 5.
@93Polarbear and @awesomebins I submitted my TF application a week before the deadline and has not been reviewed either.
I think, perhaps, it is best for us to not be too worried about the transitional funding gimmick. Some people see there TF status change and get rejected and some don’t see a change and get accepted. As far as my preferences go, my top 5 may be a little picky (DC, Boston, Nashville, etc), but Oklahoma and Memphis finish out my top 10. I’m under the impression that they accept/reject you first and then look at what your preferences are and figure it out for you. I don’t know, though.
@93Polarbear Dc was one of my top regions too!
I doubt I will get in with DC, but i’m a political science major so I had to try haha. I’m happy with my list of choices and i’d be fine going anywhere on the list.
To answer @nationals95 question the ASF was due on March 3rd they all closed on that day. Also @awesomebins I was extremely picky with my preferences haha I don’t think it counts too much. I only have 1 HP on mine and it’s in “Least Preferred”
Transitional Funding update:
My status has changed from under review to incomplete. All three of my documents now have a “YES” next to them. I was just asked to email them because they think I may have underestimated the total cost of my education.
I am not reading too deeply into it, but I will admit that there seems to be some correlation between acceptance & TF status so I will continue to update you all for the sake of the thread.
@TFA2016AJ Thanks for sharing!! Whether it means anything good or not, I would still be so excited at seeing that change!! Fingers crossed for you- keep us updated!
@TFA2016AJ Same with me. They emailed to ask for my FAFSA and it was changed to incomplete and then to under review again.
According to the 2015 thread, which may NOT be true by the way, your TF app isn’t processed until you’re placed because your award depends on your placement. Therefore, many 2015 people thought that TFA doesn’t review funding applications until they’ve decided to accept and place that person. If your documents have been verified, its supposedly a good sign.
I’m not sure if I believe this, but it does make sense. But, lots of other things also make sense. We shouldn’t read too much into it.
@TFA2016AJ Did you interview the first day? I did, maybe they’re starting to go through everyone’s TF applications by interview date.
Anyways, here’s the thread from 2015: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/internships-careers-employment/1672835-teach-for-america-2015-corps-p92.html
Beware, if you’re an anxious and worried person like me, you probably shouldn’t look. I’ve come to like 5 different theories on what everything means so far. Lol. Good luck everyone
@awesomebins I wouldn’t worry. I think they care far more about your potential to lead than they do about your GPA. You meet the minimum GPA, which I assume is important because many states require a 2.5 to be eligible to teach.
I’m pretty sure if they email you asking about transitional funding, you’re in. My top choices are DC Los Angeles Bay Area (I also only put 3 for my highly preferred). I really hope I get placed in DC because I’m getting engaged and my partner lives in DC and is studying here! I put it as a special circumstance but idk how much that really affects where they place you. 9 days…
