Teach For America- 2018 Corps

Now my timeline is back…I wonder if that means they’re done reviewing my application. My codes haven’t changed, though. I’m going to keep checking daily since the applicants for last year’s corps didn’t seem to discover the codes until the day before their admission decisions came out. It might be useful to future applicants if they know how early those code changes can occur.

My timeline is still gone. I interviewed on the Wednesday so maybe they’re just slower reviewing mine than yours

Yeah my timeline is also still gone. I don’t really remember when it went away but I interviewed last friday.

My timeline is still gone. I also interviewed Wednesday.

Has anyone seen any change in their transitional funding status?

No update on the transitional funding, just says Under Review. My timeline never went away. I wonder if the website will be updated the last business day before the announcement so our codes will be updated tomorrow. Wishful thinking perhaps and maybe I should learn some patience ha!

My timeline has not gone away but I also have not applied for transitional funding.

I’m not sure why but it does really help to have other people to talk to that are going through the same thing. The same long terrible wait! Do you mind me asking where you guys all interviewed?

I interviewed at the tfa office in philly! It was really cool there honeslty. It gave me a hipster/chill type of vibe almost like the google offices in California.

I interviewed in CT! I had a smallish interview group

One thing I’d love to hear from you all as we go through the last few days of this wait, is what are your thoughts on all of the criticism and horror stories from TFA alums. Whenever I search TFA on Google, Reddit etc. it seems a new story of someone who quit comes up. I have never quit anything and have no intention of quitting if I am accepted. But I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on all these stories associated with TFA!

For the most part I agree with a good amount of the criticisms, but I also acknowledge that the experiences and successes vary by individual. I wish there was more posted to show the other side of the story, but I guess angry anecdotes make for better reads.
What does everyone think about the implication that most people just use TFA as a resume padder for their future grad school applications? I remember some of the criticisms talking about how TFA seemed to promote that.

For criticisms, I saw a great point that many TFA teachers have similar or better outcomes with their students compared to teachers with “traditional” training. The author pointed out that everyone is quick to criticize the TFA folks but isn’t it telling that they’ve only had five weeks of training and are able to get similar results? My thoughts are that teaching is hard, the first year is the hardest and being in low-income schools is difficult. Of course there are going to be people that are overwhelmed and quit. However, if it’s really something you want, and you truly are passionate about making a difference you’ll likely welcome the challenge.

Also in answer to another q, I interviewed online since I didn’t want to take a day off of work to go to the in-person interview but I definitely wonder if that hurt my chances. It’s just so much easier to build a rapport in-person. I really felt like my interview could have gone either way. Has anyone gotten that e-mail encouraging you to look into high needs areas like Milwaukee?

I got an email about multiple high need areas including Milwaukee, and then another the other day specifically about Tulsa. I’m surprised Phoenix isn’t on the list; the state government is making it easier than ever to teach anything in Arizona because they need more teacher applicants.

I don’t mean to sound stupid but what exactly is the timeline? All I can see is Recommenders & References, Pre-Interview Activity, Transcripts, etc. with the check marks showing its completed. Is that what everyone is referring to?

Has anyone’s recruiter stayed in touch?

@TFA_dreamer I think we’re all referring to the numbered timeline above those tabbed sections (ie: recommenders/references, transcripts, etc) that outlines the application process steps, going from initial application through region assignment/acceptance of offer.

@EJ0822 I sent general thanks texts to my university’s recruiter and the recruitment manager who first got in contact with me for all their help throughout the application process. It’s been radio silence since.

There are two timelines basically

  1. the timeline above the application center that says each step of the process like application, interview, acceptance, preferences, etc
  2. the timeline below the applicant center header that says transcripts, recommenders, etc
The timeline above the applicant center is missing for a lot of us

My recruiter has not stayed in touch either. It almost feels like they convince you to apply and then their job is done

Thanks for explaining @shaffer1234 and @magletir12! In that case, I’m pretty sure my timeline immediately disappeared after my interview because I haven’t seen it in so long that I forgot what it looked like! But now that you explained it, I realized it’s not there and hasn’t been for a while now.
