My advanced bio teacher wrote me a really nice rec, and she sent me what she wrote about. however, there is a problem. i had given her a list of activities that I put on a college app--one of them was band, which i did only in 9th grade. She put in the rec that i am "second chair in the symphonic band," as in NOW. this is not true--she must not have read the the grade section of my list and seen that it only said "9." unfortunately, though, she has already sent this rec off to 2 colleges--jmu and st. marys MD. what should i do? call the colleges? tell her and have her correct it somehow? or should i just leave it alone?

Yeah, leave it alone.

You are not responsible for what a teacher writes about you if you have given her the correct information. In fact, most students don't even get to read their teacher rec letters. And it is clear that you did not misrepresent your activities because your own list on the app is correct. So leave it alone and the colleges will figure it out with what you wrote on your app, if they even notice. Plus rec letters that you have read carry less weight, so I wouldn't call attention to that unnecessarily. The only thing that concerns me is if the teacher's letter is superficial and focuses on things like a list of your activities instead of your qualities as a student and person based on her own experience with you in her class. A superficial letter wouldn't help you at all. So if the letter is superficial and makes it look like she really doesn't know you, then add another one to the application (but still don't meddle with this one). If the letter is not superficial, then you're set.

The same thing happened to me, with my councelor rec, and the rec from my principal, and I was kinda concerned about it, so i told my councelor, and she was like, just leave it...
My reccomendations, while nice, were total jokes. My principal misspelled my name and reffered to me as 'him' at one point (I think she just subsititutes names and extra curriculars and stuff in the same letter for everyone), and she put that i was vice president of student council THIS YEAR, when it was really last year - I was just like, whatever, because I WAS VP at once point, and she had already left, I wanted to get everything sent, and I figured it just wasn't worth it.
My councelor, on the other hand, put that i was president of student council (i told her i was only VP so she squished in a little v. next to the president), and editor of the newspaper (she only put this on my NYU recc, and i'm not sure if i'm applying, so it might not make a difference anyway)

okay, thanks guys. i would not say this rec is superficial--she definitely talks about personal qualities, because she knows me well. i guess she wanted to throw in some extracurricular involvement. i just wish she had picked a different ec. :)

thank you, i'm glad it's not a big thing to worry about.
