One of my teachers let me look at the rec that they sent to my colleges; it looks great and all, except for one thing. they listed that, as a senior, i am a contributing writer for the school newspaper-in reality, i only did that as a freshman. I have moved up a couple of ranks heavily and am now a section editor--that's more prestigious and requires much more work in high school newspaper-land.

I’d recommend not doing anything… it’s relatively minor and this probably has happened before, only the applicant never found out because they never read the rec. You shouldn’t have read your teacher’s letter in the first place.

If you are filling out the common app you might considerer writing the short essay about your current position on the newspaper. Or, elaborate on it in the Additional info section. Don’t make reference to the rec letter. Just talk in detail about your job this year so that it will be clear what you really did.
