I have a question, and it's not cornell specific. I am applying to a few schools, and I just found out that one of my teacher recommendations were never submitted. I contacted the teacher, and he said he would submit it as soon as possible. What if it gets in after the deadline? I made a note on my applications explaining it. I also had additional recommendations sent from mentors at a summer internship just in case. Do you think I will get rejected because of it? Or will they accept it late?

Late teacher recommendations isn’t generally an issue as it is not your fault. The school generally contacts you when you have missing items a couple weeks after you apply. You might want to call the schools to be sure.

Ok thanks just wanted to be sure

Can you go back and choose another teacher that is already listed on your common application, if this teacher is “forgetful”. You can send another reminder through the common app to that same teacher. At my D’s school, teachers are not supposed to say they will provide a recommendation unless they will truly follow through on it. The code phrase for a no is “I will not be able to provide you with a recommendation because I only take so many requests and my limit has been reached.” (which may or not be true) This eases the awkwardness of telling a student that you cannot provide one (for whatever reason) and especially if they would have to supply a less than flattering one. Send the reminder or use the alternate teacher because you can list two on the common app and then your guidance counselor’s would be separate.

I cannot get another teacher. I only asked two, and the common app does not give me a choice to send a reminder. It was kind of awkward because I had to text him (I have his number left over from a field trip). He said he would send it when we get back to school after the break.

I was wondering if mediocre teacher recommendations hurt a student’s chance of acceptance. For example, would generic recommendations stating things such as, pleasure to have in class, achieves high grades, etc., be the determining factors in a Cornell decision?

Also, would high test (SAT I and II) scores mitigate the negative impact the letters have on the adcoms of selective colleges?

For Ivy League schools where all the applicants are so qualified, having mediocre recommendations in my eyes will hurt. How much? Only the admissions people know that.

Best of luck to us!
