i think too many here sweat the ssat stuff and have been pretty calm lately. overall, i think i am a good candidate with good ssat, B+ average, football, lacrosse and being african american.

my only worry are the teacher recommendations. got my report card today and read the teacher comments with my mom. good grades tho i got ragged for effort re extra help seeking by my algebra teacher despite a B+ in a hard class. my language arts teacher also gave me a B+ but wrote that i talk at times to disturb others. these are the teachers that wrote my recommendations to the schools. i got an A+ in science and an A in social studies with great comments like "great effort", "glad to have in class", and "bright young man." my language arts teacher is a woman. the other teachers are guys. i know that i can be high energy and maybe too enthusiastic for the female teachers.

i dont think the teachers are wrong about me but the comments on the report card make me wonder if the recommendations are balanced. my report card comments are balanced so i hope they are sent along with my grades.

anyway, now i wish that i knew what my teachers wrote. i wonder if there are any parents or current boarding school students who could help me get a grip. people have told me that the teacher recommendations and interviews are pretty important. i interview well so no worries but feeling like the teacher recommendations may hurt me since i dont come off as a saint.

You probably don't have anything to worry about. But....It's not too late to ask the science and/or social studies teachers to send in recommendations as well. All the schools my son is interested in that only asked for Math and English I called and asked if they would accept and additianl teacher rec and they all said they would welcome it. You can print the additional teacher form from the common application and use that. It may or may not make a big difference, but it would probably make you feel better.

Some schools send "report cards" with the comments, some (ours) send "transcripts" which only include the actual grades.

thank you linda and ibftw. i have read your messages over the last couple of months and respect the way you approach these threads. keeping my fingers crossed for a couple of choices.

We did the same as Linda. A former teacher at my son's middle school wrote an extra recommendation for each school. And we also asked a coach to write a rec and send it to each school. For the most part these represent extra recommendations.

These recs are very important. One school's admissions rep pointed out that these are the people who are with my son every day and know him and how he learns and interacts with others. The adcoms are trying to get a picture of who you are and how you will fit in as a member of the school community.

If you know someone who you feel can convey who you are either on the football field, in the classroom, or in any other venue or activity, go the extra mile and ask for the rec. It can't hurt!

So, definitely ask him to write a recommendation. And, it doesn't need to focus primarily on football. He knows how you react to criticism or praise, lose, win, motivate others, whine, kick helmets...no, that's not you! :)

You get the point. There is a relationship between you and your coach that goes beyond football. He'd probably be honored to write about you!

sorry if this is the wrong thread to write this in but I was wondering what the adcoms do if they have everything except from me and one of my teachers but are missing 2 teacher recs. I gave the recs before Christmas and the school has not received them yet the deadline was the 15 should i be worried about how this will effect the admission process?

one thing that I was worried about was whether my extra person would write a good recommendation

I have been volunteering with a liberal organization for a long time (and seem to be the heir apparant when the president retires in 20 years) and had the president whom I spend a lot of time with write my recommendation. the thing is that when I called him to ask if he could do it he said "well you know, this puts me in a very tight spot because I don't really want you to leave". he asked me when I would start if I got in. I said september, you could tell he was thinking about november elections. I'm pretty sure everything is ok because he offered me a copy of his comments

but nhfootballer, your coach is probably a good guy who will give you a positive review, but I would suggest getting a copy of the letter just too make sure

thanks roses and baseball mom, i saw my coach on saturday night at our end of year football banquet. he told me and my folks that everything has been sent. my coach said to be sure to let him know where i am playing next year so he can come to a game.
