I'm seriously concerned because I have an application due November 15th plus a pre-screen and audition (this is for Illinois Wesleyan) and two of my three recommenders have not started their applications yet. The good news is that one of them is done, but the other two have been saying that they're "deep in work" or I caught them during a busy week. I understand that, but at the same time I've gotten all my schoolwork done as well as finished all of Common App and the writing supplements; I'm waiting on their recommendations. How do I tell them that I need them completed by next week? I don't want to be disrespectful, but I invited them to recommend for each of the schools a month ago...

First, you don’t need to wait on them. Send your ap in. They don’t need to go together. Second, they still have over 5 weeks to finish their recommendations. Don’t panick yet. I would make sure, however, that they received their invitation from the CA and that they can open the link so you can resolve any problems with that sort of thing before they get started.

Be patient and understand that your teachers have to do recommendations on their own time. This is not something they are paid for and there isn’t time allotted in their work day to accomplish it. Many teachers have a lot of recommendations to do. There is plenty of time still and, so long as you know they received the invite email and are aware of the 11/15 deadline, there is no reason to rush or pester them. You may prefer to have everything completed well before the deadline, but so long as the recs are in by Nov 15 it’ll be fine.

You worry too much too early. For all the schools my D is applying with 11/1 deadline, half of teachers have not even started and only one of the 4 invited teachers finished uploading.

Quick question: of the 3 recommendations my son assigned (2 teachers, 1 counselor), one teacher is now listed as “started.” Does that mean she has already uploaded her recommendation, it’s finished? Or will it say something else once it’s actually finished?

Started means she has registered and started working on it but did not finish the whole thing and upload the letter. It is a kind of like how your CommonApp is before submitting any application. It would be changed to “submitted” followed by a date when the teacher finished.
