Since Im applying early, and Columbia is my number one choice I want to make sure my teacher recs are perfect. Im having my Ap lang teacher from last year do it, becuase were really close. I wanted to have my Calc teacher do it, but she doesnt write very long ones. Would it be alright if I used another english teacher? I had her for Sophmore english, but she has also been my debate coach for 3 years.

Basically, does it matter if the recs. come from the same subjects?

What's the problem with the Calc teacher, exactly? Does she just not write flowery prose? Does she write generic recs? Does she not know you that well? If she knows you well and can write you a great letter that is short and sweet, use her. If the letter will be mediocre, use the two english teachers if they will write you the best recs. If you have good math grades you'll show that you're well rounded.

I originally had the calc teach write one for me, and she decided to show it to me before it was send, and Im glad. Its maybe 5 sentences and while it says im a great student yadda yadda, it doesnt say anything expectional about me. She knows me really well, but shes the first to admit that she doesnt like writing recomendations (so i doubt she puts all that much effort) and she isnt good at stating what she thinks. I have all A's, in AP calc ab and bc, as well as AP stats (same teacher).

So, using two from english teachers (even though one is also my debate coach) is okay?

I believe Columbia requires one rec from a Humanities teacher, and one from a Math or Science teacher, so I don't think 2 from 2 English teachers and one from math or Science would work.
