I just called Columbia admissions to ask about teacher reccomendations. They told me absolutely no more than 1 supplemental reccomendation, which is fine. But they also said absolutely no 10th grade teachers, and preferably both should be 12th grade teachers. Did anyone out there use a 10th grade teacher for one of the rec's? In general, what is Columbia's policy on reccomendations?

I had 4 supplemental recs, lol... I hope they don't mind. I needed them because I changed schools, and the teacher at the school I am currently going to, do now know me very well.

you need to get teacher recs from teachers that are currently teaching you.

luckily the my history and english teachers (who both wrote recs for me) have been teaching me for the past 4 years... i dunno how it worked out like that.. but it was a fortunate coincedence.. had them for GCSE and IB.
but my math teacher who also wrote a rec for me has only be teaching me g11 and 12.

i think you def. need to get recs from current teachers that teach u..

I had a 10th grade teacher and a 10th-11th grade teacher give me my recommendations. I don't really think that a current teacher can evaluate you well, especially if its the first time you have had him/her. I was never aware that we were not supposed to give 10th grade teachers recs.... the application never said anything about it.

How could an early decision applicant possible be asked to send a 12 grade teacher recommendation They would have known us for only 2 months by the deadline!

i got an 11 grade teacher and a 12 grade teacher..woo im safe
i was actual iffy about the 12 grade one because they dont know u very well..i asked her when id only known her for like a month..first quarter grades werent even out yet.

That's weird. Because i checked and they never specified. They just said a teacher who taught me in an academic subject. What? Oh well, I have a 10th and an 11th.

I have a 10th and an 11th, but the 10th one is my MUN advisor too and I asked him since I am SG. I am not going to worry about it. All my 12th grade teachers are new and only knew me for 1 month before I had to turn in the papers for the recs.

Woah...I didn't mean to cause such a scare! Whoever I talked to seemed somewhat fishy in her reasoning. But she REALLY was emphasizing current teacher, which still doesn't make sense to me, since most people ask 10th and 11th grade teachers. Don't you think it should be good though if the teacher has full insight into you?
