The teachers in our district our going on this "strike," protesting for more pay. However, to prove their point they refuse to do anything for their students such as writing recommendations, attending social events such as prom, etc. The worst part is that deadlines for summer programs are just around the corner, and every one of them want recommendations from teachers. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Like, should I contact the summer programs and explain my situation?

Haha Do You Go To Mission

Wow. That...really, really sucks. My advice would be to have a conversation with your favorite teacher - tell him/her exactly what your situation is with the summer programs - and then if he/she tells you that it would be in your best interest to look for an alternative route instead of waiting for them to stop striking, then I'd write to the summer program.

Hopefully if you have an especially strong relationship with any of your teachers, he/she may write you a rec under the radar despite being on strike.

Wow. This is what I would call "at the wrong place at the wrong time"

Good Luck.

wow.. can't the teachers be mature enough to atleast help the students? geez..

as earlier noted, try to find a teacher you have a good relationship with, and try to work it out with him/her.

Talk to your teachers and tell them how much the recommendations mean to you and how much this is affecting your future and how your whole summer is going to be ruined if you do not get into these summer programs and that you were really looking foward to it.....play up the guilt factor :-P.

Pianolover, you're just going to have to find someone other than a striking teacher to write those rec letters. Someone like a school counselor or administrator, religious or community leader, EC leader, etc. If the application specifically requests a teacher, just include a very brief note with thye application that teachers are involved in a labor dispute and are not writing rec letters at this time. No long editorial, just a one-line typed note.

our school's in the same boat. Only our teachers won't even hold club meetings (so most clubs are goner), too.

yeah i do go to mission.

thanks for all the replies

the thing is the teachers can't write us any recommendations because otherwise it would seem as though they weren't supporting the cause. Even if I am close with my teachers, that won't make any difference

oooh, tough luck, ask the principal, he/she might be qualified to write your rec
