Teachers Availability - Who is Right?

okay. I have heard two different answers when asked about the availability of teachers at every orientation registration.

First one is that at every orientation, there are new teachers updated on the site where you go to register for classes or same teachers with new times.

The second answer was that whatever you see on the registration page for classes is what you see, and there is no changing, opening of new teachers or times, and whichever class that's seen closed is closed (and I am not talking about the time when students forget to pay dues and slots open up).

Which answer is right? since I am planning out my schedule and trying to select teachers at this point.

They don’t add new teachers - spots open in the ones that are already there. I also do not think they add new times. Its whatever is on there right now.

It is what is there but for example, the UGS seminars- if there are 5 orientations, only 1/5 of the seats in each class are opened up for each of the orientation sessions. Something like that. So the number of seats changes, anyway. It is possible that a new section of a class could open up but I would not expect that to happen. Like if an academic department had wanted a fourth section of a class and weren’t sure they were going to be able to offer it - and then sometime in July the dept realized it had what it needed to offer the fourth section

hmm then I guess I’ll just look up those teachers and forget about the times and decide at the moment since they might add better times or I am last in line to register…

Another question: Could I go into the library and register instead of standing in line b/c I’ll be at last since my last name starts with an “R”. So right after I talk to advising people, could I go ahead and head to the library? And do I need UT id card to sign in library or can I find an alternative that day ?

Thx to all u guys …I response as much as I can as much as I have time … Keep the FORUM ALIVE!!

No, you will do advising a day or two before you register.

It won’t matter where you register but you still won’t be able to register to sometime after the early people in the alphabet go. Your RIS will say when you can register and this will be based on your last name.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the Library idea; You can just walk right in, but you’ll need your EID and password to log in to a computer. You won’t have OAs there to help you if you get into problems, but there’s not much the OAs can really do for you at that point anyways.

I am going in for a transfer orientation on July 6th…not sure how the two or there days deal would work out… I heard it was only a day.

the transfer orientation is only one day. I went to the orientation on June 15th and it was really simple.

First, you check in between like 8-830 in the union building(Texas Union Ballroom), i think you can start checking in as early as 7. Then there will be an opening session until about 9:45. Then they will start calling everyone according to your major and you will go to the college meeting for your major. Here you will have to walk for about 10-15 minutes to some buildings they take you and you will get a bag and receive free tshirts for your college. Then you will have academic advising until like 11(this is where they will remove your advising bar). They will have a sign in sheet if you want academic advising one on one and this one on one advising part is optional so you can sign up for this any time before you register for classes if you want.

From 12-1 there are some optional parts such as campus tour, University Health Services and Guide to Financial Aid(this is required if you are receiving money from the government but i didn’t attend it because my head was hurting really bad and i had to eat lunch lol).

Then from 12-12:30 you will have to attend the Registration Information Meeting. This is where they will show you steps on how to register. There is also another Registration Information Meeting from 1-1:30.

Then from 1:30-2, There will be meeting for How to Apply to Transfer to majors such as Architecture(this was for June 15 only), Engineering(June 15 and July 6 only), Business, and Communications. So if you plan on changing your major to one of those colleges, then it would be a good idea to attend that because you will have some ideas on what classes to take before you register. I went to the one for Business.

Then from 2:30 you will be able to register at the FAC. I went to register at about 3 and waited about 20 minutes in line. And at the transfer orientation, your last name doesn’t matter when you register. I got my Student ID and upgraded my UT EID after I registered for classes.(Make sure you get your student ID and upgrade your UT EID before 5 because they close at 5).

Oh and bring a Government-issued photo ID because you will need it at check-in and when you get your student ID and upgrade your UT EID.

if you want more information then go to the orientation website:

[Office of the Dean of Students - New Student Services - Summer Orientation](http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/nss/sumorient.php)

well I guarantee my head will hurt too (lol) because I read every page in the McCombs catalog when I had nothing to do (but still a couple of questions for advising though).

And by upgrading your UT EID, do you mean just chaining the password online (which I already did) or actually changing the EID which will happen at check in?

For advising and registration, since its not done by last name, do you just run up asap and get ahead of the line and did you encounter a problem with class timings at registration since you were 30 min late. And does everyone come together and register or they separate students into different majors and then register?

I know the ID is gonna cost like 10 buks & is there anything else I need money for (besides eating lunch). Yea I got financial aid but idk if it’ll be activated that early

you upgrade your UT EID at the same time when you get your ID. it’s not changing the password, it’s making it more secure and personal and you need the people at the FAC to do that for you. you mostly need money for food and the ID. but you might buy some souvenirs or supplies elsewhere. for example, I bought some school supplies from the Co-op and some food and drinks on Guadalupe. if you run out of water, you might need more from the vending machines as well. I’ll leave someone else to answer your advising and registration question since I’m not a transfer.

well i always have this problem when i don’t eat lunch on time. and the worst part is that once it starts hurting, i have to either take advil to stop the headache or else just deal with it for the rest of the day.

and yea henryj223 is right about upgrading the UT EID and bringing some money.
and you don’t pay for ID over there. it will just be billed online on what I owe page. you just have to pay it within 30 days.

and honestly man you should try to get there early in line to register. but if you can’t then don’t worry too much. when i registered for my classes, i only got 1 out of 4 classes/time/professors that i wanted. so the other 3 i just registered with other professors and time. but i kept checking at home and so far i got 3 of 4 classes that i want now. i am also on waitlist for one of the class so i’m sure i will get in that class because i am #3 on the waitlist. so ya if you don’t get the class/time/professor you want, then keep checking for openings at home.

and one more thing i noticed so far is that if the class is on waitlist and you really want to be in that class then join the waitlist or else you will not get in that class. and the waitlist goes up to 50 people but the advising lady at my orientation told us that if you are at about #12-13 on the waitlist you will probably get in the class. but anything after that you probably won’t. (i am pretty sure this is right, but please correct me if i am wrong about this waitlist thing)

being only 30 mins late and getting only 1/4 classes you wanted is a heads-up news for me (especially for someone like me who is picky about specific teachers). I guess I’ll get right in front of the line asap and when you checked for class openings while you were in the wait list, did only the class times get updated or were the professors (new professors) also updated?

Just woke up right now so ignore my grammar …feelin like whatever… rite now

not all classes are put on waitlist, only some are. and if the class is not on waitlist, then whenever someone drops the class, it will open up again until someone takes it so you just have to keep checking for that.
the two classes that i wanted didn’t have a waitlist so i kept checking like every 30 minutes and i was able to get those classes within like 4-5 days. (i have too much free time lol) and i also heard from some people that a lot of classes will open up again so keep watching registration if you want to switch classes around still - alot open and close up all the time.

Yeeeeeeah…it’s crazynass.

Some advice, though: if you ARE going to go to the FAC for registration (and there’s nothing wrong with that), just bring your laptop. That way, you get the convenience of being able to get online the MINUTE your time slot opens up and you get the convenience of being able to ask an O.A. if something does end up going wrong. If you go to a library to register, everything will probably be fine, but if you have a question that you NEED answered, there will be nobody there to help you.
