Hi, everyone,
I've been admitted to Teachers College at Columbia U. Some people say that Teachers College is just affiliated with Columbia and is not part of Columbia U like other schools.
But still, there are a lot of people saying that Teachers college is a pretty good school itself and it is one of the oldest graduate schools of education in the US. So I am really confused as to its exact connection with Columbia U and how good it is academically. Is teachers college as prestigious as other shools of Columbia?
From what I know, Teacher College is relatively dependent compared with other schools considering it has its own housing system and other stuff....
Is anyone here familiar with Teachers College? Is it worth attending? How is Teachers College when compared with GSE(Graduate school of Education at U Penn)?

I'd appreciate it if you could share your opinions. Thanks !!^_^

Hi, I go to Columbia. A lot of my friends are TC students.

Teachers College is affiliated with Columbia AND it is a part of Columbia. TC has its own governing structure and is a little more separate than other graduate schools, but TC students also benefit from the affiliation. For example, TC students have their own ID cards and their own mail system, but they have access to all the libraries and resources that the university holds. They have their own career center and don’t use the one at the main campus, but theirs focuses more on education. All the TC students I know, when asked, would say they go to Columbia or are a Columbia student - because they are. It’s Teachers College of Columbia University.

Teachers College is a prestigious education school in its own right, so yes, it is on par with the other schools at Columbia. Teachers College has been affiliated with Columbia University almost since the beginning (it was founded in 1887, and became affiliated in 1898) so the integration with the university is long-standing. It was also one of the first educational schools to use scientifically supported methods of education in tis curriculum.

TC and Penn are about on par as far as education schools go - both are very well regarded.

juillet, thanks for the information. That really helps.:)

Teachers College is wonderful! My son loves it! And yes, it is affiliated with Columbia University but has its own governing board. It is a GRADUATE school.
