Teacher's recommendations? What's in the email?

Well, at the end of my junior year, I approached three teachers and asked about recommendations. Senior year has just started and I haven't followed up just yet, but they wrote generic-ish recommendations. Now, will the MIT email be formatted in a way where they'll have to completely rewrite their recommendations? Or can they use the ones they've already written?

I go to a high school with 2700 other students, and it would be pretty difficult to ask teachers to rewrite recommendations in the next month in time for the ED deadlines.

MIT does have its own form, although it’s not necessary for teachers to use the form, as long as they address the points MIT would like to see within the body of the letter.

The letter doesn’t have to include any MIT-specific information, and it’s not a problem if the teachers don’t use MIT’s form, but if they don’t address the issues that MIT is asking for information about, the letter will be less helpful for your application than it otherwise would be.

Alright, I’ll just make sure to tell them this week to make sure the topics in the MIT recommendation are covered.

I am also applying to other colleges through the CommonApp. My school also has ~2800+ students and I was wondering if it is possible for teachers to write one recommendation for all colleges I am applying to. How would they go about doing this?

The Teacher writes the generic letter of recommendation. The teacher signs the MIT form, and attaches the generic letter. Maybe the teacher adds a few MIT specific comments.

Thanks, OperaDad!

And so my journey begins…
