TeleBEARS & Submit of Intent to Register

Hey everyone, I was looking through Berkeley's academic calendar and I realized that TeleBEARs begins on April 7, 2014 while the Submission of Intent to Register (SIR) is due on May 1, 2014. Obviously you would want to submit by April 7 so that you're able to register for your classes (it's already competitive enough), but does that mean you only have a week to decide which college you want to go to? Is class registration for other colleges also before the SIR?

Telebears begins on April 7 at the earliest, meaning people who already go here and have already taken a lot of units/are athletes/DSP will get the earlier time slots. As an incoming freshmen, your telebears date probably won’t be until June something if I remember correctly.

So no, class registration for you will not be before SIR, it won’t be for a while after it.

That April 7 doesn’t apply for incoming freshmen or transfer students. You won’t have your Telebears until you come to CalSO in the summer.

You cannot register for classes at a university without committing to attending it

Something kinda funny about Berkeley registration is the Telebears Phase system.

In April, all the current students get their Phase 1 appointments, where they register for up to 10 credits… about half a schedule. These appointments are staggered over a couple of weeks, with priority based on seniority and whatever else.

Next, in the summer after SIR, new students get their Phase 1. I think this usually happens during CalSO, but you can do it online if you have to miss CalSO.

Then comes Phase 2 for everyone. This is again staggered, same seniority stuff applies. Everyone gets up to 16 or 18 credits I think? Pretty much you get the rest of your classes.

After Phase 2 ends, it’s the adjustment period, where you can add up to the max number of units (20-ish) if you want to. 20 credits is a death wish, but if you’re waitlisted in something you might want an extra class in your schedule.

The nice thing about this system is that everyone can get a couple classes they really need during Phase 1, and those who are graduating sooner can usually get everything they need. (Also, I know it’s early to think about this, but section waitlist matters more than overall waitlist position… so if a class you need is popular, pick the most unpopular section.)

tl;dr: Register after SIR. Yes, there’ll still be seats in most of the classes you need. Yes, you need to be accepted before you register at any school.
