Tell me about security at ND

We have not visited yet, plan to do so next month. I do have a couple of questions about security at ND.

I was looking at a video on youtube & it looked like ND was not an enclosed campus and there was no security guard/gate at the entrance and that anyone could drive on to campus. Is this the case? My dh reminded me that in the movie Rudy, Rudy stopped at a security guard booth but I don't know how realistic that was. Is anyone able to walk on to the campus at all hours? How do they ensure the safety of the students, particularly girls, if this is the case?

I'd also be interested in learning about dorm security, particularly in the girl's dorms. I visited my alma mata recently and they place security guards in the dorms each evening until early a.m. The dorms are also locked and can only be accessed with a security key. Is this the case at ND? How do they maintain security in the girl's dorms?

Thanks for any input.

The campus is very safe overall and I never felt threatened while I was there (graduated last year). There are guards who limit who can drive on campus, but you can drive down to main circle which is where many people get picked up to go out.

ND doesn't have as many of those emergency stations as they should, but they really haven't needed it as, again, I at least found the campus to be very safe. There is also a safe walk program so you can have someone to walk with at any time of night if you don't want to walk alone.

As for the dorms, girl's dorms used to have security but don't any longer. I am dating myself by knowing that they used to. To get in the dorm you must swipe your card and after 12 you must go through the main enterance, also enter a code, and only people from that dorm can get in.

I hope that helps some.

Compared to most campuses, ND is probably one of the most secure! We visited a Lot of campuses, east to west coast never thinking that security would become such an issue given the incidents on campuses during the past two years, and I can tell you that ND is very high up there with regard to security. We have visited our student many times-sometimes with car, sometimes having flown in and staying at Morris Inn. Security guards have always stopped us and on at least one occasion when we arrived on an afternoon to move son back into dorm (in January), guard would not let us thru stating that dorms would not officially be open until the next morning. While we don't pretend that incidents could happen on campus, we feel relatively confident that our student is in a safe environment on campus. Student has always had to swipe card when we have visited in dorm as well. We just spoke again about safety on campus since our student was home for a couple of days for spring break. I think bigger safety issues exist if students stray from campus and as our student does not have a car and workload is such that leaving campus is almost non-existent. Hope that helps from a parent point of view--perhaps more current students could address this issue as well. We can't ever be too careful!
