Dorm Room Security

Every account I have heard has said that ND's campus is pretty safe and no one needs to lock their door or anything, but I am a bit paranoid and still worry about things being stolen. I'm not bringing anything super valuable: just some jewelry, DVDs, and a digital camera. I already bought a lock for my laptop, and the TV I am bringing is too clunky for anyone to steal. :) What is the best way to protect my stuff- should I invest in one of those lock boxes, or is that not really necessary? I will make sure to lock my door all the time, but I don't know if my roommate will be equally cautious...

hmm im interested too

Notre Dame is extremely safe. But security is essential. As far as DVD's go, keep them hidden in a drawer. They do not need to be locked up, but they are popular targets so long as they are visible. Be sure to keep your laptop locked at all times. These are just as popular targets as DVD's and must be secured. But before you freak out be aware that most instances of theft are the result of carelessness or the antics of a dorm-mate with too much time on his or her hands. If your Third Season of Family Guy has mysteriously gone missing, don't panic. Somebody from down the hall probably wanted to "borrow" it for the weekend without asking. Also, be sure to keep your doors locked when you or your roommate is not inside. This prevents thieves and annoying dorm-mates from bothering you altogether.

Really, if your door is locked, it really isn't that much of a problem. Overall, people are pretty trustworthy as well. I have told this story before but I think it illustrates it well... long story short, I had my door standing wide open for over three hours with my laptop and my wallet on my bed clearly visible from the door and no one in the room. Nothing was touched! I wouldn't recommend trying it and I was very thankful when I got back, but also it shows that people aren't usually just waiting there to snatch your stuff as soon as you leave! Just lock the room when no one is there and you won't have any problems!

Ahh, I was hoping for more from my 1000th post, lol. Oh well, at least I finally made it here with members like ckmets

Lol, congratulations on your 1000th post, Irish. And thanks to both Irishs for your input!

You are going to be there very soon, you are already at about 600! Man it goes fast!

Lol, wow, this is my 601st post. That sort of snuck up on me. I think I need to stop hanging around the College Life forum...

Ahh, forums are good...except for the fact that they take over your life and steal your soul. lol, no I think you will find that boards like these are good to be on because sometimes in college you just need a break, and this works well for me!

Lol, who needs a soul anyway? Or a life? (outside of CC and facebook, of course...)
