UCR gets a lot of bad press from people for being "everyone's last choice, next to UCM," but it wasn't that bad. I was actually pleased with the campus. It's not as ugly as people make it out to be. I liked it, and assuming all of my appeals are rejected, I will be happy to attend UCR in the fall. I felt it was a better fit for me than UCSC.

You really should make a visit to the campus if you're considering UCR.

Yeah, UCR was great. I attended Highlander Day and I was very impressed, great campus and really nice recreation center. There are a lot of good places to eat like: Carls jr, little Caesar, taco bell, subway, quiznos, rubios, and much more. All of these places were walking distance from UCR, as a matter of fact, my friend and I walked from UCR to carls jr.

^^ Your daughter should really visit both campuses. They both have their pluses and minuses. I chose UCSC because I want to be in the Northern California area, the campus is the most beautiful of all the UC's, my brother went there and I have spent a bit of time there and liked it a lot, the beach is very close, and there is a lot of biking opportunities (around the forest-like campus, city, and wilderness behind the campus).

I don't think your daughter can really go wrong at either campus so I am not sure why she would be reluctant to go to either school. She will be able to find people that are similar to her at either school, and will find similar opportunities at either school as well. Best of luck in the school she chooses, 2 more days left :).

^^UCSC -was- beautiful, and I really do like nature, but I think what I was looking for in a college was the "hustle and bustle" of a big city. UCSC seemed a little too isolated for my tastes, but that might be a plus for some people, so it would depend on your daughter's preference. Also, I wanted to live in Southern California for a change, since I'm from Northern California.

Has your daughter visited both campuses? I highly recommend it. I wasn't too keen on the idea of going to UCR before, but after visiting, I really liked it.

Yeah Debbie, I can totally see where you are coming from.

I am from San Diego so I have had quite a bit of the so called 'urban life.' I never really go to the beach because its about 20 minutes away and is always super crowded by tourists. I don't bike that much because it takes a lot of effort to go somewhere that is more nature-like. I really want a change and Santa Cruz has always felt right to me; when I was 10 visiting my brother and now visiting the campus as a prospective student.

Sounds to me like you are up for a change just like I am. I am looking for a more relaxed environment while receiving the quality education, and you want to live in a big city while also receiving a quality education, and Riverside surely gives you that.

I do believe we have reached a general consensus, visiting each college is key. :)
