UCR questions - please help me :D

Hey everyone
I got into UCR but I was actually happy. I feel like they have a great bio program . I feel like I would actually go there. I feel like its a good school.

I want to know - how is the area around it ? Is it nice ? Is it safe? How far from LA?
How is the social life?
What is the student - teacher ratio ?
Is it easy to transfer out ?

Can you go to a good grad school after ?

Is it a respected school?

THanks and good luck to everyone who applied...or got in :D.......

Area around it: getto. Riverside is known for a bad city (air, water, and job) also because it is a fairly poor area thus things like crime is also high. But, like every city, there is bad area and good area.

Social life: depending on which type of person, and you can pretty much find any group of people with the same hobby, but sometimes you have to look for it and the group might not have a lot of people

Teacher-student ratio: not really sure on this, but I do know that the professors are easy to contact and so far I have had very helpful professor

Transfer out: if you come to UCR just to transfer out, save the money. I would not go into a discussion again but save you the money and save UCR of the ungrateful students that wish to get the **** asap before they even attend their first class. BTW not many people actually do transfer out (either of grade or started to love the school)

Grad school: they look at grade not the school. It is the question of big fish in small pond or small fish in big pond

Respected school: depends, UCR have a terrible “reputation” because many high school students and other college students (you can find a lot of them somewhere in this forum as well) does not care about this school simply because it is a lower UC and the city is bad. But honestly you have to get a fell of the school before you say all those, and many of the accusations people make is pretty false.

I agree with haha

I took a tour last year and fell in love with the campus. It’s about an hour to an hour and a half away from everything. Los Angeles, Orange County, beaches, mountains… It’s pretty centralized.

Honestly, I think just being at a UC gives you a better chance at grad school than a CSU would but it all depends on you and the effort you give.

Riverside does have a higher crime rate and I would suggest carrying pepper spray with you just in case, but I would think that there would also be the “university bubble” and not as much happens around UCR compared to Riverside’s ghetto.

Hey everyone

I want to know - how is the area around it ? Is it nice ? Is it safe? How far from LA?

It is relatively safe if you stick near the campus and UV. There are however robberies once every month or so, but no one has been hurt so far. It’s an hour to L.A. The campus is nice, though a bit small. Food variety is highly limited, even if you go to the U.V.

How is the social life?

Social life is okay if you join a club. Plenty of frats and sororities if you’re into that kind of thing. Lots of stuff happening all the time by the bell tower. There’s possibly more stuff going on, but I don’t live on campus so I wouldn’t know.

What is the student - teacher ratio ?

For G.E. requirement classes, it’s usually 300:1 ratio. Yes, that is 300 students to 1 teacher. Then you get TA’s for discussion in those classes, which is about 30:1. But again, those are only for G.E. classes usually. Once you get more specialized classes for your field, the number usually drops significantly, down to around 30-45:1 for the non TA/Discussion/Lab sections.

Is it easy to transfer out ?

no idea. But don’t come to UCR hoping to transfer out. If you put that idea aside, and make the best of your time here, you will have a good experience. The only reason I can see why someone should transfer out, is the lack of variety of classes and availability of seats. If you come to UCR waiting to transfer elsewhere, life will be miserable for you.

Can you go to a good grad school after ?

Yes. UCR also provides a ton of oppurtunities through their career center and other programs which you will be notified about via email. Usually internships, study abroad opportunities, work opportunities.

Is it a respected school?

It is a UC School. Though we get crap from education snobs, in the end, it is still part of one of the finest institutions in the world.

THanks and good luck to everyone who applied…or got in …

I’ll give you straight and to the point answers. I was previously a student there, but decided to go to community college. Anyways here goes,

how is the area around it ? Is it nice ? Is it safe? How far from LA?

1- About 1 hour to 1 hour 20. I live in Los Angeles. Area around school is safe, apartment housing is pushing it, past the school area is straight up hood.

How is the social life?
It is how you make it. If you’re dorming it’s great. I met great people and had fun.

What is the student - teacher ratio ?
-Depends on your classes. Generally if you want to see the teacher one on one they always have office hours where they’re usually more than willing to help you out.
Is it easy to transfer out ?

Can you go to a good grad school after ?
-Depends on how you do in school. Many factors go into this, not just your undergrad. But my guess is just as good as yours, I’m only a sophomore in college.

Is it a respected school?
-It is ranked in the top 100 nationally. So “respected” is ambiguous.

So many bad things about transferring out…I am thinking of going and transferring to UCI because it is a lot closer to where I live and plus I really want to go…but is it really bad to transfer out? I am so confused…
Also how do you tell them that you are going to the school? I have no idea how to confirm my admission…

@lulubee:

Bad is a relative term that for us UCR lovers, we would think slightly that those who transfer out of UCR is “bad” because we assumes that those who do came here for the sake of transferring out. Not to say you are, but there are so many cases in which people do come with the mindset of getting out of this place in a year or so. But this might be a misunderstanding and people might have their own reason (such as you). In your case, transferring out wouldn’t consider as “bad” because there is no sense of disrespect to UCR in your reasons. If there is no sense of disrespect to UCR, then there is no hate from us (if I have the power to represent the population on this forum for UCR).

If you believe going to UCI will make you happy, go for it. The choice is yours, so only you can decide. If you believe that UCI will be better for you, then ignore all the hate.

Personally, I wish you the best of luck

@lulubee. No, it is not bad to transfer out if you have good reasons. It is only bad to transfer out before giving the university a chance.

There are some people that say UCR better bend over backwards for them or else they’ll “transfer to a better UC”. UCR doesn’t own them anything but a UC education (which they already provide). We, at UCR, tend to dislike those folks because they are the ones that dramatize us and fuel a false, negative reputation.

If UCI is closer to your home then I’d recommend you go there. Gas is only going to get more expensive, and it is easier to get support if you are close to home. Make sure you are a good fit at UCI. Also look into how strong your major is at each place. If UCR has a better department in your major and gives you better financial aid and opportunities, then I would stay here. Lots of things to consider.

cyber hug Good luck to you in your future endeavors!
