I met a wharton alum at a my parents dinner party. He was doing some traveling through out the country and we talked briefly about colleges and whatnot. He was a very interesting gentleman, and after talking with him about his experience at Wharton. (I think he graduated 10 years ago, not sure though) I did some more research and talked with my GC and I realized Wharton is the school that I want to go to.

However, my grades are poor, only living with a 3.46 UW. But I am working my heart out this semster and I am showing tremedous progress. I might get all As for the first time in my life. (its sad, I know, hehe)I will have a 3.6ish at the end of this year. I will be around the top 20%. I figure if I try my best, I can get well into the top 20% by mid-year reports.

I have a liver problem, just give me fatigues more than the average joe.

My SAT are average, nothing super amazing. I think I will get around 2100 as my final score for college application.

After posting my chance thread in the chance section last month, I gained some new and better ECs. Well, I had them before sort of, but I never thought they would qualify as ECs since they have little relevance to school.
I have a quite a few good business ECs outside of school. I dont feel like discussing them on a public forum. But they are well above average. And I can have recommnedations done by local successful business ppl if that helps at all.

Thats about it.

Tell me, what do I need to do, start the next Wal-mart to compensate my poor grades? or should I just give up and slap a postage on my application in november and hope for the best?

if you just recently found out about wharton, chances are you'll be changing your mind VERY soon. yes, wharton is the best undergrad business school in the world, but it is the most competitive. there have been people that have been dreaming about wharton for years and years, and you just recently decided to apply after talking to a friend of your parents and your gc.

if you are sure about business, you should also research other great business schools such as berkeley-haas, umich-ross, nyu-stern.

and you say that you have a liver problem and get fatigued easier than everyone else, maybe a school as cutthroat and competitive as wharton isn't for you.

i'm not trying to put you down or discourage you, but there's a reason wharton is #1. after thinking about it and doing more research, if wharton is the school you really want to go to, then don't listen to what anybody else says and go for it. good luck with everything.

I have always wanted to do business though.

I am a junior right now and I have decided to apply to NYU-stern, USC(marshall), UNC-CH, and UPenn as my top choice schools.

I have always know Wharton to be a excellent school but I always thought that I was not bright nor smart enough for Wharton.

But I will definitely apply and hope for the best, thanks though.

Is there anything I can do beyond this point to increase my chance at Wharton?
Do more community service, get better grades, retake the SAT, etc.

Wharton is the way to go. I got in ED and I thought I was a bit of a long shot. But, I showed them what I had, with all my effort, and it paid off. Yeah sure, Wharton is competitive ... but who cares!?!? Just give it your best shot.

To compensate for your lackluster grades, I would make a genuine effort to focus on your ECs. Try to do an activity that draws a parallel to what you want to concentrate in at Wharton. If you gave all you had to get the grades and SAT scores you got, then I would not retake it. The first time I took it I got a 2000. The next time I took it I thought I would surely clear 2100, but then I ended up with a 2030. The point: Your ECs and your personal situation that will be the deciding factor on your Wharton acceptance. Grades and Scores are important, but, based on my opinion, I think Penn has a tendency to look beyond scores and weigh the essay and ECs more heavily than other schools do.

I would say that I'm in the exact sitution as you, being a junior with not so stellar grades. I'm also planning to do my first SAT test in April. Just as Lucky here wrote, I'm focusing heavily on my extracurricular activities and to be honest - I only got one major activity going on (not a member of various clubs and stuff). Hopefully it will show my passion for entreprenurism. Then again, I'm an international so my chanses should be way lower than yours.

I just read that only 4% of the Upenn incoming freshemen graduated outside of the top 10% of their class. Its probably even less for Wharton. So you and I must move heaven and earth to stand a solid chance.

I have now decided that Upenn is my first choice and regardless of anything, I will apply ED and give it a whirl. I sincerely hope I get in though. If I dont get into the Penn I will just go to another school and with hopes of tranferring.

I will just try and get my grades and SAT scores as high as possible and polish my ECs as much as I can before november.

Thanks a lot guys, and good luck to you to Corporatefinance, I assume you are applying for the class of 2011, hope to see you around the campus then. :)

Ben.

Feel free to post any additional comments, they are much appericated.

don't count out your essays. if you can write very genuine essays that show your great desire to be at wharton and do well at wharton....i think you have a significantly better chance of getting in. if you'd like to chat about any of this further don't hesitate to message me...i'm wharton '08....but good luck to you.

What type of ECs are essential For Wharton
Does lots and lots of community work ,President

Ross - University of Michigan is a top tier undergrad bschool also! you should consider it along w/ their preferred admit program. i am not sure if they are going to make it a 4 yr bschool by next yr but currently it is offered to hs seniors only through preferred admit of 70 students. check it out

Someone was accepted to Wharton ED at my school, I just found out a few days ago.

The general consesus in the school is deep resentment and boiling distaste towards her. No one seems to think that she derserve to go since she is arrogrant, snobbish, rude, and lofty towards almost everyone. She is also whiny all the time. She is smart but she just looks down upon everyone.

I remeber when I first her, the first question she asked me was my rank and GPA....

I dont mean to disrespect her in anyway since she must had the grades and the ECs to back-up the decision. But her personality is definitely not bright.

She sounds like my type of girl. She was probably considering going out with you but she needs a boyfriend with at least a 1590 and 4.0 GPA...sorry bud, she's outta your league. Lol, she's like a college herself...if you get what I'm saying lol. Very tough to get in.

It wouldn't hurt to take a little road trip down to Hell, and when you get there, ask for a person named Mr. Satan. He'll know what to do. I'm sure you and him can work out something...I've heard he's a good agent. He's gotten a lot of his clients into Wharton. Let me know what he says :)

blue hunnydew is right. two of my friends applied to wharton. one is an all state football player wihth a 3.1 and 1900 sat. one is 4.1 with a 2200sat..

guess which one got in

all state football.

its all a crap shoot. no formula. NO ONE can say a certain person who is Mr. Everything A ..is better then Mr. Everything B
