Really good letter of recommendation from English Teacher.
Another exceptional letter of recommendation from my housemaster. A housemaster is basically my individual headmaster that supervises me throughout high school (different than a guidance counselor).

Really good essay about how my mother nearly died last spring and how it has inspired me to try much harder in everything I do, especially including getting a better eduction.

The problem with my gpa is that freshman through junior year my grades were not really competitive. My senior year gpa on the other hand, is a 3.8 on a scale of 4.0. This, with the support of my essay, justifies that I really am trying a lot harder in school.

I do not know if its of any help, but I take a honors weighted Political Science class currently at my high school, and have maintained an A average all year in that class.

I also have been accepted to Umass Lowell and Umass Dartmouth.

Your GPA and test scores put you in the bottom 20 or 30% of students, so you have some chance just based on that, although not great.

I think you have a pretty good story, and your senior year grades are good, so that boosts your chances. Will it be enough to overcome 3 years of mediocre effort? I hope it is.

Worst case, having already been accepted at UMass Lowell (which is not a bad school), is you go there for a year, kick a$$, and then transfer. Not your first choice, I’m sure, but not that bad an alternative either.

Thank you for your answer, I appreciate it.

I am glad to know you feel like I have a chance. I wasn’t really expecting to be anywhere beyond the bottom of the bucket to get accepted to Umass Amherst. You are also very right in saying that my story doesn’t justify my poor grades previous to my senior year in high school. I understand that and its my fault I chose not to try.

I think if I don’t get accepted I will follow your advice and go to UML and then transfer. I’ve been to both schools overnight and made a lot of friends so I am sure I will have fun even if I have to spend a semester at UML.

When I receive my letter I will inform everyone who visits this post of whether or not I was accepted.
