My grandfather went there in the early 50s for 2 years, but he transferred to Youngstown State after that. He said he liked Youngstown State better because he got more attention and the professors were real people. He said that the head professors never actually taught; they had other people teach for them.

Obviously, that's a 55-year-old review, so I'm sure a lot has changed, but that's what I know about Cornell.

beautiful, large campus on a hilltop overlooking Cayuga Lake. Cayuga Lake offers many recreational opportunities. Sailing classes are held on the Lake. Recreational activities nearby include skiing, hiking, golf, boating.

Ithaca is a great small city with some excellent restaurants, a pedestrian mall, great vegetarian restaurant (Moosewood), an active professional theater group. There is a mall nearby and movie theaters.

Cornell has an excellent theater program and terrific performing arts center. Collegetown is a fun commercial district next to campus. Cornell has one of the best dining plans and great food (for a college).

Cornell offers programs in a wide variety of disciplines, all excellent, most are world-class. Hotel school is the best in the world. The on-campus Statler Hotel is where students hone their skills. AEM program has a very good reputation. Some crazy hockey fans. Excellent intramural sports.

The atmosphere...well, there is a lot of work and high standards. Students tend to be serious about their work but there are parties and lots of social activities. Students I met were from all over the world. They are very down-to-earth and friendly, including the prep school grads. Faculty are generally very good teachers with only rare exceptions. They are very busy but faculty are in their offices a lot, much more than the minimum office hours. Undergrads can get appointments easily or just drop in. Grad students are available for help from early morning to late at night.

Lots of research opportunities. I would say that Cornell has a high proportion of students who are interested in technical areas (math whizzes) but less than 50%. There is a marvelous balance at Cornell of humanities, social science, engineering, math/science, professional majors. It makes for a rich and exciting campus culture.

I can't imagine a better school for all-around experience.

Cornell is different from any school I am familiar with. In the first place, it's a real university. Ezra Cornell intended to found a school where "any person could get instruction in any study." Cornell isn't built around a "college experience", it's built around learning and research.

It looks to me like Trinity College plopped down in the middle of UConn. On a hill. With glimpses of the long, narrow lake. With deep spectacular gorges cutting through and dividing the campus (and the city) into sections. In the middle of upstate New York. Thirty minutes from the interstate. There's a definite quirky feel to the area -- a bit of a time warp back to my own college experience at UConn in the 70s.

Cornell is chock-full of intensity. All these young people, all really into their studies and activities. All of Cornell's programs are top notch -- whatever field you are talking about.

North Campus housing is all freshmen. West Campus is mainly sophomores I am told, but apartments and fraternities border West. Collegetown is the southwest corner, with some dorms, apartments, and houses. Collegetown has bars, restaurants, and college-type shopping. There are two major shopping areas in Ithaca with typical big box and chain stores not too far from campus, but not walkable.

One rumor that I heard is that Cornell recently received $450 million in gifts to make biological sciences/medical sciences among the very best in the world. To be split between the Ithaca Campus and Weill Medical College in NYC. They are constructing a new bio bldg in Ithaca.

Another thing I heard is that Hotel is more highly respected than AEM. But, AEM is among the very best business programs in the country. Hotel is #1. AEM is popular among the frat boys who want to make lots of $$$.
