telling college counselor personal info?

I really want to take advantage of the free sounseling sessions at my schools in the fall, but is it ok to tell them about tragin events, for example, if a rape victim told the counselour about their unreported rape, would they call police, seperate the person from their family. If someone has serious famiy issues and are still dependent on them, but live away from them, can that conection be cut off?

Free counseling is one thing, but it’s also really important you go to the right person!

You may want to consider speaking with a psych. counselor instead. A GC isn’t really one to guide you with emotional issues like that, although she/he may know of colleges that provide better support than others.

Your other concerns, like if the GC is a “mandated reporter”, or if you could possibly face being placed in foster care, has to do with what you’re writing about and with your state. I still suggest you start with someone who can appropriately guide you (beyond which college you’re applying to.)

Will you be 18 when school starts? If so, I don’t think mandated reporting/child abuse comes into play. And I’m assuming you’re talking about regular counseling done by the college, not a guidance counselor helping you with college stuff. One thing about the city you’ll be attending college is that there are MANY free counseling services available, especially regarding sexual abuse, if you’d rather keep the school side separate.
