Telluride Association Summer Program ( TASP ) 2008

wait. someone please answer my crit anlaysis question!
please?

hey you guys, do you have to get a letter of rec from an english/ arts teacher? would it be okay to get one from a teacher in a technical field, simply because they happen to know you better?

alamode: My interpretation of the prompt led me to believe that you are to write an analysis regarding an argument about something the author is attempting to convey.

newtexan: I'd say go for the one who knows you best. That being said, you'll want to make sure that he or she:
-writes well enough to make it coherent and understandable (This is not meant to be mean to your teacher; I just once had an EXCELLENT math teacher who simply could not write well.).
-can say something about your writing and oral abilities, because these will be important to TASP, given the nature of the program.

However, I'm sure your technical teacher can comment on your maturity and integrity and all of that, so yeah. If TASP didn't want any recs from teachers in the technical field, they would have asked for that specifically. And they didn't. So go ahead!

Ugh, I can't think of anything to write about for my critnal... I was thinking about doing Ida Fink's A Scrap of Time, but I can't think of a decent thesis for it, other than saying that her use of pathetic fallacy, imagery and point of view in her work helps subtly ensnare her readers' emotions and bring them to a heightened state of anxiety and concern for her characters, but I don't think it's a very strong thesis and it's kind of bugging me. It needs to be more argumentive, somehow, or more specific.

I did finish my conflict essay (mostly, I'm not happy with the last paragraph) yesterday, which is good! The conflict and the critnal were the ones I worried most about. The future plans one was easy, so I've just got to do the critnal, the topic one, the program ranking one, and the book list, and most of those don't seem like they'll take very long, which is a good thing because this is going to be pretty much the craziest week of my year.

Ok, you guys are right, I really don't want to go to Telluride, but can I at least put it down, in my Application, that I was invited to join TASPs? I really don't think it would help too much.

^I think you have the wrong idea - just because you're invited to join TASPs.. they just do it by PSAT score / percentiles. All you have to do is say that you were a national merit semifinalist................

I think someone has already said something about science-inclined people applying to TASP, but this is along different lines. If you are interested in science as well as humanities, but plan to do science in college, should you say that in the future plans essay? and what if you're not sure on any specifics?

I think you should be honest. I'm saying that I want to do science in college, even though I also love the humanities. You could compare yourself to the classical scholar who wants to be versed in everything. Or you could just tell them what you like to do and what you might do with what you like to do, even if you're not sure now. They said it was okay if you don't know what you want yet. Most juniors really don't, and when you're smart and are good at just about everything, it makes it even harder. Just think it through and present it well.

I like your style, Midgit!

Hey guys! I'm new to these forums but I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a quick question about on the essays: When they ask for a critical analysis essay, do they expect an analysis of the writer's work and ability or of the characters and their behavior? I mean, I've written analytical essays before and all but this critical analysis thing is totally screwing me over.

^ i wote mine kinda about the theme of the book, and how the writer's technique and the characters and plot support it. idk if that's the way to go tho'.

I finished the essays, yay! on a second thought, tho', they all suck and i probably have to scramble to edit them. :(

Alamode: Yeah, in the style of that lang essay. :) Not exactly STYLE, but in the same VEIN. Basically, that's the sort of argument a critnal would have.

Spai88: definitely! Be honest. :) And as far as specifics go, don't worry about it. In 11th grade you're not SUPPOSED to have your whole life set out ahead of you. Things change, people change, and life takes you down different roads even if you wind up in the same final place. ^^

D-Yu: Yuuussss, that's what a critnal doooooes, lol.

Hopot: I think whichever is fine, as long as you show you're analyzing something critically and using support from the text. basically, pick a piece and then either analyze it as a whole or pick SOMETHING from it that you want to deconstruct.

P.S. - Tako, great reply to Midgit's question. :D

I just did the character thing with the critnal...I originally analyzed everything (plot, theme, conflict, setting, character, etc.) but it was way too much...

I like the fact that everyone's telling me I'm not supposed to know what I want to do...

OK, I have a little problem. The professor that I asked to write my recommendation couldn't get it done over break because her mother died. She has also been swamped with other requests for college recommendations and says she might not be able to write mine in time. But she also said that the TASP deadline is quite flexible and that they wouldn't mind if it were a day or two late.

Do you think this is valid? I'm asking for a recommendation from my counselor just in case.

I'm guessing that because the recommendation is not directly in your control, TASP might let it slide for one or two days. Maybe email telluride or something..?
How important is the rec, anyway? Everyone says that it's 95% essays on this board, and then... so... would it be like 3% rec, 2% academics? haha.

"Uh, no, you most certainly do not get a certificate for applying. Why would you? It's not like you get a document from Harvard that says, "Good job, congratulations for applying to Harvard!" that you can show off to your future employers. W-t-f."

LOL, A++, I VOTE THIS FOR YOUR CRITNAL

Heehee...jk...still great, though.

Writing the TASP essays has given me a new look on things... the essays wre the first pieces of writing I have actually put effort into in a long time. I enjoyed writing, and now I have a paper to write for English, and ... ah, I can clearly see now that my analyzing skills have been revived! It feels so good. Okay, just felt like sharing. Hope everybody is doing well.

Hm, I got my transcript and letter of recomendation today. They look fine, though I think my teacher may have forgotten to include an extra copy of the rec inside the envelope. Is this a major problem?

I'm done with my booklist. Haha. Am working on my future plans/career one. Nothing else done, and am still not quite sure what to do for my critnal. Procrastination is the key to success. :)

Neltharion, where does your username come from? I'm tempted to say Tolkien, but I don't seem to remember hearing of a "neltharion" in Middle Earth...

Your guess was close (somewhat, I suppose). It's a character from Warcraft, that horribly addicting game. Definitely not a good way to waste time. >.>
