Telluride Association Summer Program (TASP) 2010

To be honest I haven’t really read for fun ever since high school started. -shame-
Most on my list are from school.

And I completely understand. I’m not cutthroat like that but you can always email them for yourself. :)

Mulberry, the same’s true for me; since high school started, and especially in 10th and 11th grades, I just haven’t been doing as much outside reading as before. One thing I realized though is that it’s partially just due to a shift in my reading patterns. I read Newsweek and The Economist weekly (and Time, although I find it more into celebrity culture and such at times than I care for), and I read a variety of political blogs and online political news sources, fivethirtyeight, Politico, The Hill, etc. Plus there’s my indispensable daily NYT, as well as the monthly issue of Wired (which, for anybody who’s interested in modern society and culture, science, technology, and how they interact, is an excellent magazine that never fails to be interesting and thought-provoking – any other Wired readers on this thread?).

Anyway, that’s just my spiel. And if anybody has an answer to dunbar’s question, whether books that we read for school, but didn’t discuss in school and weren’t exposed to others’ ideas on the book should be considered in school or out, I’d like to know.

Yeah, I’m totally procrastinating on my lit analysis because of that (I’m Pygmalion girl, btw) But my alternate book’s pretty good, so I’m not TOO worried…still.

Currently trying to edit out the kinks in my nutso quantum-philosophy-plato essay (info on that on p 51ish)…namely that the one where it doesn’t make sense to anyone but me. twitches

^That’s still heavy reading haha. But are you really going to count such sites as fivethirtyeight?

Is anyone else finding that they actually really enjoy writing these essays? Even if I don’t get in, I won’t regret applying, because I have actually learned a lot about myself and damn, it’s pretty interesting. Maybe I’m just a nerd :D

The deadline is monday night! Yes!
Okay–someone help me. Please!!!
HELP!!!

Alright so I wrote my WMUT essay. I loved it. It was sharp, biting, precise and filled with pretty intense language.
But, it was controversial. I realted realpolitick theory to Haiti’s demise. I showed the essay to my fater. He told me that I was " completely not politically correct" My statements were rather strong. Like damning strong. Do i revise my argument to incorporate political correctness or do I say what I want to say. I mean there is a political correctness limit. After all, I can’t write an essay about how slavery was right. Though i would(keep in mind I’m African American) analyze positive eefects of slavery.
WHAT DO I DO?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

Well, as long as you don’t come out and say “death to white people” and all that, strong opinions are good. i kinda had the same problem cuz i wrote my WMUT on the invisibility of multiculturalism in American classrooms, so i tlly understand your pain. it sounds like u should tone down the language a little but definitely keep the sentiment. =)

Does anyone else on the east coast get the feeling that they’ll be staying up until 3 am Tuesday morning? :P

nil, that essay sounds awesome. I think the fact that you’re African American totally makes it okay for you to say that (as bad as that sounds, it’s probably true). Like, I can’t say I think Kwanzaa’s ridiculous, but if I was black, then I might be able to get away with that.

Gesundheit, I used the slavery as an example. I can see that but I wouldn’t go there. What i’m writing on is the earthquake in Haiti and the proximate and ultimate causes of the earthquake. I relate it to America’s meddling in Haiti’s affairs. But i also question whether America is wrong to do so. I posit that america is suimply protecting itself through the realpolitick theory. My language is brilliantly harsh though. I have to stop it.

Oh, okay. I still think the harshness would be okay, though…tone it down, I suppose, but keep the essence of it.

What do you mean by “not politically correct”? Usually to me that connotes racially or culturally insensitive language toward historically marginalized groups; as such, I am a big fan of political correctness and not ashamed to say it. Since you say you’re African American, I doubt you’re doing this.

If you’re saying you’re being politically incorrect in a “white people suck!” and “f*** America!” kind of way, which is what I think you are saying, I think that’s entirely justified, and not politically incorrect in the slightest. But then again, I have pretty liberal views about race politics in general that I don’t want to explicate on now.

I am a big fan of harshness, btw.

My essays are looking more and more inferior as I see everyone else’s topics. I need to get off CC but I can’t! D:

^Haha same.

Still undecided on the “discuss problem” topic.

I mean, I’m addicted to CC. Be confident in your essays! I’m sure they are pimping.

Epigramm, I will PM you the last sentence of my essay and then you’ll see what I mean.

OK, legit. I have strong feelings about how Haiti has been portrayed in the media and my essay has absolutely NOTHING to do with the issue, so don’t worry.

I replied.

Can we make some sort of TASP chat room? That would be legit and probably totally against Telluride rules, so we probably shouldn’t do that.

Just finished my second essay. And it sucked. I keep watching myself put all of this garbage down on a word document and yet I can’t stop myself. I guess I’d rather just submit these really crappy essays and get rejected than to not apply at all : /

My WMUT essay sucked too. Like, no joke. I may have to write a completely new one. My crit. analysis one turned out okay I think, as long as its not tooooo unconventional. My other ones were subpar, but I’ll settle.

Good luck guys, it’s the final stretch. Not really, but it is for this segment of the process.
