Telluride Association Summer Program (TASP) 2010

I have to send in my stuff in…about 8 hours. Stupid time difference means the deadline’s 4pm Monday for me and I won’t get home until later than that. Gaahh.

^ that really sucks

How serious are your #2 essays (problem)? I’m starting mine but I had someone take a look at my intro and they said it was too “conversational”.

^ The language is formal. I’m not using contractions or overly slangy words…but it’s not going to be a typical formal essay because you’re going to have to give your own opinion and use personal pronouns.

Just finished essay #1 to #4!!! Only the order of the seminars left. I know this must been asked before: How long should it be? Can I just state my reasons in a really succinct way? Most of my other essays are over 1000 words, so a short one may balance the overall impression. And also, will they possibly place me into the one that I said definitely not want to attend?

^ I would definitely keep it short. No one wants to read a dissertation on which seminar you would rather or rather not go to. And there is always a possibility that they’ll place you somewhere you don’t want to go, but I think they’ll try to put everyone into their #1 or #2.

aaaaargh.
I’ve finished editing all but one of my essays, which I’m letting my mom look over before I call it “done”. Major palmsweats D:

Okay so is it DEFINITELY due Monday at 11:59 pm rather than Sunday at 11:59 pm?

On the application it says “Online applications must be submitted by midnight (Pacific time) on January 25, 2010.”

Midnight on January 25 would mean Sunday night…??

PLEASE ANSWER I don’t want to lose my chance because of a stupid misunderstanding!

I will send it today just in case.
I am still finalizing all the essays and the process is not that fun, especially for the future essay. I am very confused about my future so I write in quite a confusing tone and I hope that the confusion is not contagious for the judges. I know it’s good to have a clear goal but apparently this situation does not apply to me. I need inspiration so I come up here on CC. And it helps.
And my final exams are coming in 25 hours so I need to plunge myself into memorizing 20 different types of hormones and others. I wonder why human’s bodies are so complicated. But anyway. I need to calm down and do whatever I need to do.

-scream-
I just submitted it!

I think someone said they submitted theirs already–did you get a Transaction ID? Because the field’s blank on my success page. :S

As I’ve said before, this is NOT the rule for everyone. This seems to be your style, so keep your formal tone. But please don’t give the impression that everyone must write in a completely formal manner for each essay like you chose to do. Write authentically; that is the only universal instruction with merit, IMO.

Yes, possibly. It’s obviously not often that this happens, but I know of at least two people from my TASP that had ranked our seminar at #3/#4.

What is * with * this WMUT stuff? It’s the topic of choice essay, kiddies, not the “What Makes U Tick” essay. I can’t believe how widespread that moniker is. Lawl.

p.s. Good luck everyone! Keep going! Whether you’ve almost finished, are half-way done, or still have to write four essays–persist! It’s more than worth it, I promise.

^ Aah! I didn’t mean to give the impression that everyone had to write it like that. People should listen to the ex-TASPers and not me >_>

Wow, I didn’t know that there were so many people interested in applying to TASP, good luck to everyone! I was also wondering about the due date. The website says the completed on-line application must be submitted no later than January 25, 2010, but that implies that it’s due Monday at 11:59 rather than Sunday night. Can anyone clear this up for me?

Sorry for the double post, but I was wondering if my essay topics were a little too dark. For my first one, I used a poem about a man going through depression and how he snaps out of it and for the second one, I mention death a lot even though the ultimate moral is about overcoming death. Will they not consider me because of my topics?

I think that they care more the way you present and defend your argument than your specific topic. Besides, they cherish “diversity”. You will be fine as long as you are true to your feelings.

Of course they’ll consider you. Don’t be afraid to write about anything if it interests you. They’d rather have someone with weird/unconventional interests than a hack who pretends to like textbook intellectual things but secretly has a passion for some other more quirky topic.

No probz, I just wanted to clear it up since y’all read into everything waaaay too much. Just wanted to nip that in the bud.

omgomg i just submitted. so. so. so. so. nervous. i had begun to obsessively revise so i figured i might as well submit. NOW i get to study for midterms! this is the life.

What are people listing for areas of academic interest? I’m wondering how granular this should be. I’m generally interested in sociology, but I’m wondering how specific I should be.

I did my analysis on 1984, is that ok?

No.

Just kidding. Why wouldn’t it be OK?
