Telluride Association Summer Program (TASP) 2010

^
Remember, quality > quantity.

Hey, do they contact you even if you are straight out rejected (even before the interview round?

My heart stopped when I clicked submit… Now to wait for that sexy-ass rejection. Yumm.

i gotcha eric but, truth be told, none of my essays were really coherent. mostly because they’ve been largely written tonight. i’ve been thinking about these topics since december, though, and that may show.

when do we get to start posting essays? or is that taboo…?

SUBMITTED!

WOOT.

:D

Feels good.

Now I can stop worrying, haha.

SUBMITTED. good luck to everyone!!

SUBMITTED. omg finding out it was due pacific standard time was a godsend cause i live in an est time zone. (yeah that’s how much i procrastinated, those 3 hours made a difference :P)
i’m already making summer plans in anticipation of rejection haha
so my topics just for kicks

 1. critical analysis - hobbes from the comic strip “calvin and hobbes” as a metaphor for subjective truth [this was imo better in theory than execution. it was <1000 words :frowning: i i wish i had this idea more than 1 day in advance]
 2. social issue - argued against preserving endangered languages
 3. conflict - realizing my disconnect with my family abroad when my grandma died and started how it motivated me to relearn my mother tongue
 4. future - the only one i kinda liked, it was about how doing spelling bees as a kid influenced my possible career paths… but my whole thing was like indecision about my future i wish i had more concrete ideas blergh
 5. ranking - ut austin, cornell II, cornell I
 6. book list - tried to put it in some kind of logical progression but i doubt they will realize it

anyone else want to put their topics up? i still have a history paper to write so i don’t plan on sleeping =D

submitted. Yes! I join this club. can’t stop shaking…
Topics were:
Critc analysis: Twilight, yeah, I know boring… I talked about how Edward/Bella relationship had the characteristics of abuse
Social issue: the loss of dissenters -essay least proud of only 770 words or so
Conflict: my multi-cultural background
Future: I said, I had no plans, didn’t need them
Ranking: Cornell1 ,cornell2,UT Austion and such
6. Book list- all over the place

We’ll see.

HAHAHAHAHA YESSSSSSS. Submitted. I’m so happy…

Please don’t tell me I was the last one hahaha…

I am so good.

But my critical analysis was exactly 610 words. I am not getting in (this will be my great regret in life).

But oh well, good luck to everyone else!

:D

If nothing else, this has taught me to not procrastinate writing college apps!

Final wordcount tally:

1.Crit analysis: 990 (pretty much a standard English essay, nothing great)
2.Topic essay: 1,400 (very meh about this one, argghhh)
3.Conflict: 1,500 (my fave by far, way better than all of my other essays)
4.Future plans: 780 (absolutely indecisive, and proud of it. I actually liked this one after the 2nd draft)
5.Seminar: 630 (very unconvincing, I’d say it’s my worse but I don’t think they really count this too much)
6.Book List: About half literature, half children’s books  had about 25 books on there…

Overall: I liked my essay #3 a lot, I might use it for college apps, actually.

Everything else…meh.

I don’t really have high hopes but it was still a great experience applying, whatever happens :)

That explains all the new members! :)

Let’s list essays in order of happiness with them!

 1. Conflict. (I think a lot of people can say the same, from what I’ve seen.)
 2. Future plans.
 3. Critical analysis.
 4. Topic of choice. (It’s not that it’s a bad essay, just not as good as the other 3.

pretty much sums it up.)

Not including seminar choices as an essay because I didn’t really think about it as much as the others. Cornell II, Cornell I, UT Austin, btw.

Mine were:

Critical Analysis: basic alligorical view of Kafka’s Metamorphosis, nothing too special but I think I had an interesting view on it.

Topic of Choice: The downfalls of Political Correctness

Conflict: all about being a tomboy and having that be very difficult in a preppy all-girls school , but my final resolve to be myself… wow that sentence was coherent haha

Future Plans: how I aspire to work for the FBI because of the tv show Numb3rs… boo yah!!

Seminar Ranking: Cornell II, Cornell I, UT Austin

I feel like I’ll either get a good look because my essays were pretty off the wall, or just get flat out rejected because of my random ideas. Good luck to everyone!!

Most loved
Conflict- talked about fitting in 3 cultures 1,400 ish
What do you want to be- gave like 6 reasons that was a bad question 1,500
Critical analysis- Twilight- abuse My mother hated it. Not a good sign. Maybe i’ll be lucky? 1,310
Topic of choice- there is too much agreeent in our society-ick.707 words
Book list-eclectic- nonfiction/fantasy based but intellectual

Indeed! I’m kinda sad that I didn’t put more effort into this. Guess it’s a lesson learned for the future.

I’m equally unhappy with all my terrible essays, especially now that I’m reading all the cool topics you guys have thought of. Mine are a lot lamer.

My book list is about half SF with a little fantasy, ‘classics’ that I forced myself to read and ended up loving, and one book for school thrown in there (The Handmaid’s Tale…guess that might count as SF as well though). I don’t read non-fiction if I can help it. Seems like everyone else’s book lists have at least some non-fiction on them… :S

^ Chin up! Everyone thinks their own topics are lame, trust me.

What other programs are you guys going to apply to? I want to find some sort of backup plan for TASP but all the good programs I’ve found are science/math heavy.

@dunbar - The only other programs I am applying to are pretty much math/science heavy. It’s sad that there isn’t a stronger value of the humanities. Also, it’s really hard to find programs where you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg in order to participate.

Fretting. I made the mistake of copying the wrong draft of one of my essays, and I could spot two glaring typos. I hope that doesn’t completely ruin my chances. Ah, well.
