Temple Admissions Packet and Financial Aid

My daughter was recently accepted at Temple University. She received the message on the computer and then a packet came in the mail. There was no admissions letter in the packet and nothing about financial aid. Is this a mistake or should we be waiting for the letter and financial aid info sent separately???

@dwfmom , I can share that last year when my daughter was accepted, she received an email, followed by 2 letters a week or so later. One letter was an admissions notification which welcomed her to her college/major, it also included notification of her scholarship and admissions into the Honors program. The second letter provided more details about the honors program and the scholarship. Need-based aid/federal loan info was not received until later in the spring, after last year’s FAFSA deadline of March 1, I think it was available to view in early April.

My daughter’s merit scholarship is one of the guaranteed ones that TU used to award. In the following link about freshman scholarships, TU states that to qualify for scholarships, applications need to be submitted by Feb. 1 and notifications will be available no later than March 1 on the TU portal.

It does seem as though you should have received a letter about admissions along with the packet, but the merit scholarship info may not be available yet. It is not clear from the freshman scholarship link whether they will be awarding merit scholarships on a rolling basis, or will notify all recipients after the Feb 1 deadline. Notification of need-based aid might be earlier, too, with the FAFSA now being available in the fall. I would recommend calling or emailing admissions/financial aid to find out the timelines and whether an admissions letter went astray.

My daughter decided to attend Temple after visiting and attending a truly awesome accepted students day in February, which I highly recommend doing. She absolutely loves it and is doing great.

My daughter was recently admitted to Temple. When I mentioned to her that there had been discussion on CC that mailed packets did not include an admission letter, she said that the original online notice mentioned that it should be printed (from the computer). I’m guessing that this year Temple decided not to send an admission letter in the mailed packet. After the fiasco of going way over budget with scholarships over the past few years ($22 million deficit), I think Temple will be much more conservative this year and will wait until later to decide who and how much to award.

Ugggggh…that’s what I was afraid of. No one seems to have a letter in their packet. We have decisions to make and need to find out about aid. I hope it’s not going to be too long to wait. The admissions office said 3 weeks from when u get your acceptance. My daughter really wants to go there.

@mamag2855 happy to hear that your daughter loves Temple!!! Does she feel safe? What is she majoring in? My daughter really wants to go there but we are waiting on possible merit aid. I’m concerned that this year there will not be as much to give out. The admissions office said that three weeks after you receive your acceptance on line u should get another letter online about the aid. We are out of state so it’s more $$ and I don’t think we will get state fafsa aid. She applied to 11 schools and so far we are 4/4 but Temple is at the top!

@dwfmom that is interesting that you were told 3 weeks…it has been over 3 weeks for my D and still nothing on her portal about aid. Huge decision factor for us so I hope something is released soon.

@dfwmom , unfortunately it does seem as though you will be waiting to find out about merit and need based aid for your D. It is hard to wait when you have other offers in hand already, but Temple University definitely has a lot to offer!

My D is in the Fox Schools of Business as a marketing major. She has really been enjoying her classes, likes her professors, feels challenged, and is doing well. She is in the honors program and was able to sign up for 2 honors classes this semester a day has registered for 2 next semester as well.

She loves being in Philly and being able to explore with her friends using public transportation. As far as safety goes, the campus itself has felt safe during visits so far, including several at night, but the general areas around it are not great. We live in a suburban area in a neighboring state, so no experience with city living. We continually remind her to be aware of her surroundings, especially at night, and to take advantage of available security escorts if she needs to walk alone. So far so good, she has had no issues. The dorms have excellent security and all guests must sign in and students must escort guests inside the dorm.

I recommend attending one of the accepted students days, if possible, they really do a fantastic job of showcasing all of the great opportunities TU has to offer. The staff and students were very knowledgeable and went out of their way to answer all of our questions. We had viewed Temple as a safety school, but it rose to top of D’s list after that visit. I hope the finances work out for your D. We could not afford Temple without D’s nice scholarship, so best wishes as you wait to hear!!

@shelleyr25 I am in the same boat as you!!! Temple is one of my daughter’s first choices but we are waiting on the $$$$. I check the portal several times a day and wait for the mailman. We are out of state so its more. Hoping to hear soon.

@mamag2855 I’m glad your daughter likes Temple! Its one of my daughters first choices, just waiting on the $$. Is she involved in any activities on campus?? My daughter wants to do media studies and production in the school of communication. She would like to do a dance team and possibly a sorority. We signed up for an accepted student day. It is going to be a big decision.

My D is in the exact same boat. We are out of state too, Temple is her top choice, we are going to the accepted students day in February, but I am nervous about getting her excited and then the finances not working out. I did call the fiancial aid office and they told me February- but I think that was just aid, not mreit. She was accepted 2-3 weeks ago.

@dwfmom @BettyQ We are OOS as well. Signed up for Feb Experience Temple Day but really hoping to hear about merit before that. If the money is not going to work out there is no point in experiencing anything LOL

We are in the same boat as you!! still waiting…I was told that merit aid comes from the admissions office. I might try calling them this afternoon.

By this time in December not very many schools have released both admissions and merit/aid info.

I don’t think Ohio State or Penn State have released all admissions or merit notifications.

Many RD schools notify in April.

While it is very hard to wait, decisions do not have to be made until May 1.
So there should be plenty of time to receive aid information.

Some schools have good net price calculators on their website that might give a good idea about possible aid you might receive based on income and assets. Some schools give merit estimate. Some are not very detailed at all.

At an OOS public school you will not get much need based aid other than what you qualify for in federal (or state aid in a reciprocal state) grants or loans. UNC and UVA are some exceptions.

Automatic full tuition merit used to be available from Temple for ACT 32 or 1420 old SAT (CR&M) and 3.8 GPA.

Now that the merit is competitive it would make sense for them to wait until they have all applications that come in by the deadline and then award from the available pool. Nobody knows how it is going to work. They might give a certain number of full tuition scholarships for top stats, they might give some smaller merit amounts to OOS students to help with higher OOS costs.

But the important thing is that you need to try to find some schoools that your child could also like and that would be affordable, so that they have some choices come spring.

My daughter did receive her letter in the mail with her Honors Program Acceptance last Friday and then on Saturday, her merit scholarship info became avail. on her portal. We were so happy as it was earlier than expected so we now have all of the info before we go to the Feb. Experience Temple Day. Hope this helps - make sure to keep checking the TU Portal daily for updated merit info. The Honors letter came in the mail last week but the merit $ info was on the TU Portal.

I applied OOS EA and got an acceptance email November 8. I then got a packet in the mail. I got my honors acceptance letter maybe two weeks ago. My official letter was posted on the portal this past weekend (12/10). I received the Presidential scholarship which is the full tuition award.
