Temple vs. Penn State Main vs Fordham

I got accepted into all three schools for computer science.

It looks like PSU's got the best reputation for the major, but I've read some things on here praising Temple's CS department as well. I'm mostly stuck on the decision between Temple and PSU, but I'm not ruling out Fordham.

I've visited Temple and PSU, not yet Fordham. Any advice? How's the Computer Science department at Temple? Thanks.

Forget Temple. It is really just a local public school, not a destination college. Generally I would say that the academics at Fordham are better than Penn State but I don’t know any specifics about computer science. I have to believe that recruiting and internships at Fordham will be better due to location.

Somehow I don’t think that 25000 undergraduates counts as a local public school.

Temple draws heavily on NY, NJ and the mid-Atlantic as well as PA.

Temple is definitely an up-and-coming university. Very different setting than PSU though.

Absolutely hilarious coming from someone from Saint Joe’s, which is a local private non-destination college, with mediocre academics, and no national or international reputation, all for $47,000 a year.

You should look at Temple’s College of Science and Technology web site. It’s pretty impressive.

Temple is a very different school than PSU, and I can’t imagine that someone who would find PSU the right fit, would also think Temple is the right fit. Have you visited both?

I must agree, Saint Joe’s has no right at all saying anything bad about Temple. Temple is definitely very up and coming, and is a very good school. I think it should just come down to whether you prefer the city or the middle of nowhere.

“Temple draws heavily on NY, NJ and the mid-Atlantic.”

No offense but this really is not true. Temple is 86% PA residents! Few come from NJ except for those that are rejected by better-and-less-expensive Rutgers (in-state tuition versus out-of-state tuition). Temple is a decent school for the price but is not a place to come from afar (i.e. not a destination college). The in-state tuition is really what makes people attende Temple. It serves southeast PA well. If you are from out of state, you are better off saving your money and going to your local state school.

I am not trying to insult Temple as it has some very good programs - especially for graduate studies.

hahahahahhaha this is so laughably untrue. We have tons and tons of people from NY, NJ, CT, and MD/D.C. and a large contingent from New England and Florida.

Everyone I know here from NJ got into Rutgers, but had no interest in going to college in NJ.

My best friend at Temple is from Dallas.
My roommate and suit-mates freshman year were from NJ, NJ and South Korea.

Next year we have a bunch of kids coming from Colorado, Atlanta, Chicago, and expanding our footprint west, with a decent amount of kids from LA, Seattle, Phoenix.

Not to mention the number of internationals we have.

Schools people coming in turned down for Temple: Binghamton, UConn, Rutgers, Penn, BU, UDel, Penn State, Pitt, Ohio State, Colorado, Oregon, Alabama, Texas A&M, Fordham, Northeastern, Syracuse, SJU ¶(LOL), Ithaca, Miami, Illinois, UMass, Indiana, NYU, VA Tech, Missouri, Tennessee, Villanova, GWU, Marquette, Bentley, Tulane, UVA, Vanderbilt, American, Baylor, Wisconsin, Bucknell, Lehigh, USC, Lafayette.

So as you can see, people turned down some pretty damn good schools for Temple. I think saying Temple is not a destination college is laughable, especially coming from someone who goes to school in Bala Cynwyd/Overbrook.

Wrong! And so easy to check:

Fall 2009: 72.4%
Fall 2008: 71.5%
Fall 2007: 71.2%
Fall 2006: 68.3%

SJUHawk appears to be trying to make a cottage industry out of running down schools (maybe those that start with “T”?). Look at this: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/927169-tulane-vs-u-miami-2.html</a> and especially post #28 for a clear delineation of numerous errors of fact and logic. Read the whole thread if you want to get the full flavor of it. Then you will have a greater appreciation as to why he should be ignored.

Don’t expect anyone from SJU ¶ to get anything right.

82 percent of Temple undergraduates are PA residents. I was incorrect with 86 percent. Still, only 18 percent from outside of PA. I cannot see how a statement that Temple draws heavily from NJ and NY is accurate. A more accurate statement would be that Temple draws mostly from PA with some people coming from NJ and NY as well.

That would be the equivalent of 5000 students from outside of PA, all of whom would be living there, not commuters. Considering that 10,000 students live on or around campus, that would change the entire feeling of the campus, as not necessarily local.
