Temporary housing in Chicago

My D is in her third year of a DPT program and will be doing her final clinical in Chicago in the West Lakeview area. She will need housing from Jan 1 until the end of April. She’ll be working on it through sources at her school but I was wondering if anyone in the Chicago area would have suggestions. She’ll be doing a Performing Arts physical therapy clinical (she was a Dance major) and get an opportunity to do some work with the Joffrey Ballet. This parent is excited for her opportunity and anxious about where it’s at.

I think your best bet would be to look for a student subletting an apartment at DePaul. I believe there is a Facebook group your D could join.

No knowledge of housing, but what a cool opportunity for your D!

Subletting for 4 months might not be attractive for the apartment lease holder. She should look at some AirBnbs and try to negotiate a 4 month term.

My daughter just started her DPT program at BU this summer, the folks in her program have a group listing subleases available while they goes elsewhere for clinical, it was so easy to find one. My daughter is moving to a 4 bedroom with others in her cohort and they all hope to be able to sublease their rooms in the future. Maybe see if something like this exists at Chicago universities?

I had that same thought though I really didn’t know where DePaul or maybe Loyola Chicago was in relation to where she would be working. I would imagine Northwestern would be too far north to be convenient. I’ll tell her about the Facebook page idea. I’m sure she’ll get more serious about it now that she’s back on campus.

So far she’s been lucky. Her first clinical was where we live so she stayed at home. The second was in a small city in the mountains of TN and she was able to find a house to rent for $1000 for the 3 months she was there. That was great since she still had her lease at her school. This one could be trickier. She had to interview for the position so it wasn’t done directly through the university though they had to approve it. Since the school didn’t set it up they don’t have the relationships set up. She’s going to check if they have suggestions as well. It kind of depends on where in Chicago the school has relationships.

I’m no Chicago expert by any stretch, but I’ve heard the Wicker Park and Lincoln Park areas have a lot of young people residing in them.

I quickly searched Chicago Craigslist and found a few sublet possibilities, but they look to be very expensive.

DePaul would be closest to West Lakeview and IMO is in a nicer neighborhood.
Loyola could work but will be a longer commute depending on where your D is working.

Evanston (where NU is located) would be a bit of a hike and rents are very, very high here.

@Knowsstuff - Any other suggestions for this poster?

So I live in West Lakeview. BTW - it’s a great area. Definitely check out sublets. They are there. Expect to pay at least $800/month without utilities when sharing with another person. Ask the school /program also. Also a safe area of Chicago mixed with young professional and college students etc. More houses with backyards mixed with apartment and condos. She wants to be by the “El” stops which would be Southport and Paulina. Going a bit more west to Roscoe Village might get her less expense housing.

PM me with any questions if needed. Getting a short term lease in this area will be tough if not a sublet but call around you never know. Don’t rule out just living with other girls and renting a room. This might be her best option and lots of people might have an extra room for a few months. Like their roomate left or at an internship. Check out Facebook etc group’s.

Thank you. I really don’t think she’d mind renting a room and living with other girls. It’s pretty much what she’s been used to for the last 6 plus years. I’ve lived in the same house for 20 plus years. Where does one go to check out sublets? I’d have no idea where to start.

Reddit for my D’s university here in CA has postings for sublets. DePaul likely has one as well.

Here’s the linky:

I checked w/a friend who has a DePaul student-they suggested looking at depaul.uloop.com
My adult kids live in the Lincoln Park neighborhood but have also lived in Lakeview one time or another. Both are nice and pretty safe. Good luck to your daughter!

So that’s where the mega-rich live. :joy:

Facebook. Contact her internship employer since they might have suggestions. Try Domu.com or the like since they due short term rentals. Around here you won’t really find Loyola students but Northwestern nursing /doctor students doing rotations. I have reached out to my wife’s best friend who does real-estate and will see what she suggest. Even though it’s for January it gets busy so don’t wait to long to secure something. Many people that are students have rooms to rent. I will contact someone else that might have a short term rental and let you know also.

I wish but many multimillion dollar houses and condos for $700,000 on my block. It’s a safe area and know the mother is concerned about that. Just have to have some street creed. Take out those ear buds… Lol

We spent some time looking at long term Airbnbs this weekend. Found a room with a private bath and access to the rest of the apartment in the Logan Square area. I know it overlooks the 606 (frankly that doesn’t mean much to me given that it’s a rather long park) but I don’t know how big Logan Square is. The area itself is about 4 miles from where she will be working. It’s about a 15 minute drive unfortunately the facility does not allow employees to use the parking. They must park in the street or use public transit. It’s about a 30 - 35 minute bus/train trip. It looks to me like that will be about the amount of time she would take from just about any of the available lodgings. The rent would be just under $1300 per month or around $5100 plus tax for her entire stay.

To my questions. Is Logan Square a safe area? Is the distance/travel time pretty much to be expected? She’ll be working at the Athletico PT on W. Belmont for those who know the area.

The 606 is great! Very cool your D’s apartment overlooks it! Generally speaking Logan Square is great! The west side, more do than the east.

Your D should plan on using public transportation. Finding street parking could be a huge hassle.

I know exactly where she will be since I live in the area. I get my bagels right next to it at American Bagel. There is street parking but have to ask if the area is permitted. But that usually effects only after 6. It’s a small parking lot and between the two business isn’t enough parking.

This would not be my first choice for someone not knowing the area to live in at Logan. There are some very cool areas and some that are not. The area of the job is where I would be. West Lakeview or East Lakeview. Or Roscoe Village. The El stop also at Belmont and sheffield has issues at night.

There is not a direct way from Logan to this location.

Message me anytime if I can be helpful. There should be places in the areas I suggested. They are more family driven areas but still lots of people her age.
