<p>I have no idea about tennis, but in fencing it works this way: it is better to be an academics star + decent fencer than to be a fencing star + decent academics.
By decent I mean some good national finishes.</p>

<p>Everyone from my school who gets recruited is in the top 50 in the Middle-States (PA,NJ,DE, WV, etc). We also have another who plays 18 singles who's in the top 70 for Middle-States.</p>
<p>Tennis is insanely hard to get recruited for at any school.
The amount of effort and practice is exponentially large than any other sport to get to the level where recuiting is even an option.</p>
